Mosaics of Meaning

Book Description

In "Mosaics of Meaning," the soul's landscape is explored through the prism of verse, each poem a shard of glass reflecting a fragment of the human experience. This collection traverses the vastness of emotion, from the peaks of ecstasy to the valleys of despair, crafting a panoramic tapestry of thoughts that resonate with the pulse of our shared journey. The poet weaves words with a deft touch, inviting the reader to step into a world where the lines between reality and reverie blur, where every moment is an intricate piece of a larger picture. "Mosaics of Meaning" is not just a book of poetry; it is an intimate dance with the ineffable, a quiet conversation between the lines, and a bold declaration of existence in the face of oblivion. Each piece serves as a mirror, reflecting the reader's own truth, asking questions that may have no answers, offering solace in the beauty of their asking. Step into this kaleidoscope of verse and allow yourself to be moved, to be mended, and to be mesmerized by the mosaics of meaning that make up our lives. (c) 2023 Book Fairy Publishing

Mosaics of Ravenna

Book Description

The mosaics of Ravenna are rated among the world's most important art works. Their quality and blaze of colour have intrigued believers and visitors since their making between the fifth and the seventh century. This book investigates the issue of the meaning of this imagery, its peculiarities, and the messages conveyed to the viewers through the centuries. It explores the function of the mosaics in the different buildings, and their interpretations in the relevant liturgical context by people living in late Antiquity. Several comparative examples integrate the mosaics in the frame of late Roman art. Written fluently on the basis of current state of research, the volume thus provides valuable new insight in one of the most fascinating sets of images of early Christian times. The mosaics were last subject to extensive investigation 40 years ago. Delve into the magnificence and variety of these mosaics, the colour photographs of which were made expressly for this book. They show the mosaics at close range and allow visual experiences that are impossible on site.

Mosaics in the Medieval World

Book Description

In this book, Liz James offers a comprehensive history of wall mosaics produced in the European and Islamic middle ages. Taking into account a wide range of issues, including style and iconography, technique and material, and function and patronage, she examines mosaics within their historical context. She asks why the mosaic was such a popular medium and considers how mosaics work as historical 'documents' that tell us about attitudes and beliefs in the medieval world. The book is divided into two part. Part I explores the technical aspects of mosaics, including glass production, labour and materials, and costs. In Part II, James provides a chronological history of mosaics, charting the low and high points of mosaic art up until its abrupt end in the late middle ages. Written in a clear and engaging style, her book will serve as an essential resource for scholars and students of medieval mosaics.

Poverty Mosaics: Realities and Prospects in Small-Scale Fisheries

Book Description

Small-scale fisheries are a major source of food and employment around the world. Yet, many small-scale fishers work in conditions that are neither safe nor secure. Millions of them are poor, and often they are socially and politically marginalized. Macro-economic and institutional mechanisms are essential to address these poverty and vulnerability problems; however, interventions at the local community level are also necessary. This requires deep understanding of what poverty means to the fishers, their families and communities; how they cope with it; and the challenges they face to increase resiliency and improve their lives for the better. This book provides a global perspective, situating small-scale fisheries within the broad academic discourse on poverty, fisheries management and development. In-depth case studies from fifteen countries in Latin America, Europe, South and Southeast Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa, demonstrate the enormously complex ecological, economic, social, cultural and political contexts of this sector. Conclusions for policy-making, formulated as a joint statement by the authors, argue that fisheries development, poverty alleviation, and resource management must be integrated within a comprehensive governance approach that also looks beyond fisheries. The scientific editors, Svein Jentoft and Arne Eide, are both with the Norwegian College of Fishery Science, Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics, University of Tromsø, Norway.
