The book explains the way forward during 2014 and beyond for Indian IT Exporters in what the author refers to as a multi-speed global economy. The book covers several trends and industry shifts affecting Indian IT exporters from a business perspective. The primary focus is on multinational corporations (MNCs) and global banks based in the US and in Europe. The author leverages his industry experience to discuss strategies and new business models for Indian IT exporters. He also explains how the industry as well as Indian IT professionals can move up the value chain. Many topics are also relevant to India based captive units of MNCs in the Indian IT industry. The book is in three parts. Part 1 (chapters 2 to 4) introduces what the author describes as a multi-speed global economy. The theme of Part 2 (chapters 5, 6 and 7) is how to get closer to global clients from a business perspective. Part 3 (chapters 8 to 10) covers implications for Indian IT exporters. Global Value Chains: What are the Benefits and Why Do Countries Participate?

Over the last two decades, world trade and production have become increasingly organized around global value chains (GVC). Recent theoretical work has shown that countries can benefit from participation in GVCs through multiple channels. However, little is known empirically about the economic importance of supply chains. We use the Eora MRIO database to compute different measures of GVC participation for 189 countries and illustrate global patterns of supply chains as well as their evolution over time in order to contribute to this topic. We find that GVC-related trade, rather than conventional trade, has a positive impact on income per capita and productivity, however there is large heterogeneity and the gains appear more signifcant for upper-middle and high-income countries. We document that “moving up” to more high-tech sectors while participating in major supply chains does take place but is not universal, suggesting other factors matter. We confirm the findings of the standard gravity literature for GVC trade; highlighting the key role of institutional features such as contract enforcement and the quality of infrastructure as determinants of GVC participation.




Understanding Value Chains


Book Description

Understanding Value Chains first examines the process of the institutionalization of the main theoretical foundations of the global value chain since its conception in the academic field and, subsequently, in international organizations. The authors analyse the evolution of Mode 5 services jobs and salaries in the EU, assessing whether there are signs of functional upgrading and how it affects female jobs and the gender pay gap. The coffee global value chain is broken down into five segments: primary production, processing, trade, roasting, and marketing. An investigation of 34 Indonesian provinces was conducted in an effort to reformulate the policies relating to circular sustainable reverse logistics. Four new components: vision, mission, and managerial orientation; infrastructure capabilities; human resource and organizational commitment; and regulation are used to assess the readiness of each level of government. The authors discuss how, as the UK had no trade agreement with the African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries immediately after the referendum vote, this transition period presents an excellent opportunity to negotiate a new trade agreement. Value chain analysis is used to help understand how Guyana participates in the gold value chain, and to help develop appropriate policies to address its supply-side limitations. Guinéa-Bissau's position in the cashew value chain is assessed, and recommendations to address challenges are proposed. This compilation presents the agricultural value chain framework, introducing the main ideas of the system dynamics methodology and demonstrating the application of system dynamics modeling to a real-world case.
