The First Census of the United States (1790) comprised an enumeration of the inhabitants of the present states of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia. Unfortunately, during the War of 1812, when the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the returns for several states were destroyed, including those for Virginia, of which Kentucky was a part. In 1940, this "First Census" of Kentucky: 1790, was published, being developed from tax lists from the nine counties which comprised the entire State in 1790. Individuals are listed alphabetically, and following each name is the county of residence and the date of the return. The cumulative returns for Kentucky are included on page one. Also included at the end of the book are the "Land and Tax List of King George County [VA], 1782;" "Personal Tax List of Fayette County, 1788;" "Personal Tax List No. 2 of Fayette County, 1787;" "Land Tax List of Prince William County [VA], 1784;" and the "Land Tax List of Charles City County, 1787." Walter LaFayette Bell (1889-1976) was born in Butterfield, Missouri, son of Jonas Bradley Bell (1843-1931) and Martha Ann Cooper (1865-1890). He married Ruth Rankin (1900-1975), born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, daughter of James Lewis Rankin (1854-1928) and Mary Elizabeth Dawson (1860-1912). Ancestry traced to John Bell (1668-1713) who died in Surry County, Virginia and Robert Rankin (1749-1816) of the Carolinas and Kentucky, as well as many other ancestors. Ancestors, descendants and relatives lived in Illinois, Missouri, Utah, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Arkansas, Texas, Indiana, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Iowa, Mississippi, South Carolina and elsewhere.

In 1790, Virginia was the most populous state with over 800,000 residents (including territories that are now West Virginia and Kentucky) Between the first Census and the Civil War, the U.S population grew by more than 30 percent each decade In 1870, only 3 percent of U.S. residents were 65 years old and over. With increased life expectancy and lower birth rates, the proportion had grown to 13 percent by 2010. The 1900 census showed that Wyoming, Montana, and Nevada had 150 men for every 100 women. In 2010, the ratio was 96.7 men for every 100 women at the national level. Mississippi had the lowest per-capita income throughout the 80-year time period between 1930 and 2010. From 1910 to 1920, Los Angeles experienced growth from Hollywood’s dominance in the film industry. Its population increased by 81 percent that decade and its land area more than tripled.
