The Melodic Method in School Music

Book Description

Excerpt from The Melodic Method in School Music: A Manual for Teachers and Supervisors The method of instruction here outlined is de signed to take cognizance of these principles. In some respects it may be found to depart from the practices now followed in many schools, but when its pedagogical basis is understood, no radical change is needed for its adoption by any competent body of teachers. Any well-arranged set of music text books may be used in accordance with this method, such minor changes in manner of presentation being made as will at once suggest themselves to the alert supervisor or department head. A Manual for Teachers (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Manual for Teachers It is a good thing to start with a definition. Generally speaking it is not hard to say whether a sound should be called a noise or music, but it is harder to define what music is in so many words. The following is fairly comprehensive, though not very exact: Music is the effect of sound under certain conditions and when in accordance with certain rules. Primary Teachers' Manual (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Primary Teachers' Manual The present work is one of two manuals that have been prepared in collaboration by Mrs. Rowland and Mrs. Smith. The plans for both manuals have followed along similar lines. The introductory pages are made up in the main from the teachers' books in each course. After a short series of General Orders of Service come Special Orders of Service, one only for the Cradle Roll in the manual for teachers of beginners, and two each for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Missions, and Promotion Day. The manual for primary teachers does not contain a special for cradle roll, but has three each for those mentioned above, with an addition of two on temperance and three on missions. All of the music in the teachers quarterly parts has been retained in the same order and numbering as originally published, with much additional music, the shorter pieces being inserted in the text, the rest indicated numerically. The musical selections will be found varied, particularly pleasing, and within the range of children's voices. A few extra pieces of music not included in the Orders of Service will afford opportunity for choice, if desired. The Round Tables and list of Musical and Teachers' Helps have been prepared especially for each of the two manuals. The arrangement of recitations and music need not be literally followed: the several Orders of Service may be easily changed or adapted to any particular occasion; or may form a basis of fresh programs at the option of teachers, with omissions or additions as may be desired. The editor takes pleasure in saying that these manuals are the product of painstaking and conscientious effort on the part of the authors, whose wide experience as practical teachers has given them such appreciation of the needs of their coworkers in the departments as to render the work especially valuable.
