Green and White

Book Description

Green and white are the colors of a nation called St. Brendan High School in Miami, Florida. After The Teachers Will Save US, Principal Jose Rodelgo-Bueno, PhD, tells us the story of his high school and some pieces of American history, from the shooting of Newtown, CT in 2012, to the pandemic and vaccines in 2021. The book shows how students learn Math, English, Science, and play sports in the midst of the Covid world. Nothing stops the America of those who wake up early; not even a worldwide epidemic, shootings, and hurricanes."When I became the Principal of St. Brendan High School in 2012, I realized that I had to be speaking in public very often and to many people. I did not want to say nice things just to say something and move on to the next task of the day. I thought it could be a powerful way to transmit my faith and life experience to the students and the school community. Therefore, before giving a speech, I would start writing what I wanted to say, often with no time to spare and using any piece of paper I could find. I always kept those pieces of paper, because I did not want to repeat myself. Later, I realized it was important to emphasize and repeat a few essential things. After almost nine years of giving speeches, I found the time to put some of them together and add a few significant letters I have written during this time. After I read through all the speeches, I was surprised to see that the book records moments in my school's history, U.S. events, and an additional layer of history, my own personal life story."

Green Schools Globally

Book Description

This book brings together stories of the green schools movement ((Eco Schools, Enviroschools, Green Schools, Sustainable Schools, ResourceSmart Schools etc) in several countries around the world, with a focus on the impact of the movement on the development and implementation of education for sustainable development in each of the countries. In particular, each story will explain the history of the movement per country, its current status, achievements, obstacles and broader impact. There have been a number of evaluations of these school movements at a national or more local level, and numerous articles and chapters have been published on aspects of these schools’ activities, but to date these have not been brought together in a single volume that focuses attention on the impact of the movement on education for sustainable development in each country. This is the purpose of this volume. The green schools movement focuses on a whole school approach which aims to include everyone (students, teachers and the local community), to improve school environments, including resource usage and the environmental footprint of the school, to motivate students to take on environmental problems and seek resolutions particularly at a local level but also thinking globally, and to improve students' attitudes and behaviours as part of developing a sustainable mind set.
