Apostolic Ministry

Book Description

Excerpt from Apostolic Ministry: Sermons and Addresses IT is with some hesitation that the following Sermons and Addresses are issued in permanent form to the public. Most of them were strictly official utterances delivered by me as President of the Wesleyan Metho dist Conference. Somfhee are included'which werewnof 'stric'tly official, namely, Addresses to the Wesleyan Methodist Union for Social Service at Ox ford, to the Wesley Deaconesses at the Annual Dedi cation Service, to the Southport Holiness Convention, and to the National Council of Evangelical Free Churches on 'the Relative Duties Of the Church and the Nation in regard to Poverty.' The volume is completed by the addition of the Presidential Address to the National Free Church Council in 1906, and the sermon on retiring from the Presidency in the following year. The reason for publishing discourses thus delivered on many different occasions, and dealing with diverse aspects of Christian Life and Work, is that they form a connected whole. They are an attempt to show the inclusiveness ofthe spiritual life, and to set forth the way in which many great causes which appeal to Christians in the present day, notably, Evangelism, Foreign Missions, Social Reform and Christian Reunion, are related to faith in Christ and to the service of His kingdom. They are sent forth in the hope and prayer that they may be helpful to some in reconciling the claims of the inward and the outward, of the Spiritual and the Social, through a Clearer and more distinct appre hension Of the meaning of the Christian religion, as the revelation of the love of God and the fulfilment of love in man, through Christ. Just Policing, Not War

Book Description

2008 Catholic Press Association Honorable Mention! For decades, the Catholic Church and historical peace churches such as the Mennonites have come together in ecumenical discussions about war and peace. The dividing point has always been between pacifism, the view held by Mennonites and other peace churches, and the just war theory that dominates Catholic thinking on the issue. Given the transformation of global relations over this period--increased interdependency and communication as well as the fall of the Soviet Union, emerging nationalism movements, and the slow development of international courts--the time is right to rethink the Christian response to war. Gerald Schlabach has proposed just policing theory as a way to narrow the gap between just war and pacifist traditions. If the world can address problems of violence through a police model instead of a conventional military model, there may be a role for Christians from all traditions. In this volume, Schlabach presents his theory and has invited a number of scholars representing Catholic, Mennonite, and other traditions to respond to the theory and address a number of key questions: What do we mean by policing? Can policing solve conflicts beyond one's own borders? How does just policing theory address terrorism? Is international policing possible, and what would it look like? Is just policing a Christian solution that meets the criteria of both traditions? This important volume offers a fresh and meaningful discussion to help Christians of all traditions navigate the difficult questions of how to live in these times of violence and war.

National Sins; A Call to Repentance

Book Description

Excerpt from National Sins; A Call to Repentance: A Sermon; Preached on the National Fast, August 3, 1849, in Cumberland Church, Charleston, S. C God's; there have not been wanting those who have descended into the arena of political strife, ard bv the introduction of questions of civil polity into ecclesiastical judicatories, have fomented bitterness and wrath; and some have even been found to desert the nobler offices of the pulpit to become political agitators Well might angels weep, if weep they can, over derelictions such as these, wondering that men whom God had called to sweep through loftiest regions of Gospel verities and preach salvation and eternal life to man, could rather choose to mingle in the din and tumult of earthly things. Well then does it become the Churches on this day to put on sackcloth and humble themselves In the dust, to make acknowledgment of their sins and implore the divine mercy. In the State as well 'as in the Church there have been sins to call down upon us the anger of God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
