Establishing the Validity of the Neurobehavioral Functioning Inventory

Purpose . The purpose was to evaluate the construct and concurrent validity associated with the Neurobehavioral Functioning Inventory (NFI), a self-report questionnaire used to measure behaviors and symptoms related to the effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Procedures . Data were collected from 688 participants from two samples: (1) individuals with TRI (N = 586) and (2) students at a large midwestern university (N = 102). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were performed to address construct validity. To address concurrent validity, Spearman Rank-Order Correlation coefficients were produced between NFI scales and objective tests of similar constructs. Findings . Results of the CFA indicated significant model misspecification, especially within the Depression, Somatic, and Aggression factors. ANCOVA results indicated no difference between the TBI sample and the control group sample on the Depression, Memory/Attention, Communication, Aggression, and Motor scales. Differences on the Somatic scale indicated that control group participants reported more somatic complaints than individuals with TBI. Results of the Spearman Rank-Order Correlations indicated that all correlations were statistically significant and in the expected direction. Conclusions . Findings failed to establish construct validity and suggest that the NFI may not be accurately reflecting the constructs of depression, somatic, memory/attention, communication, aggression and motor difficulties. Tests of concurrent validity were inconclusive. The small and potentially non-representative samples in this study limit the generalizability of the findings. Recommendations for future studies are provided.
