New Theories in Astronomy (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from New Theories in Astronomy These reflections are in greater or lesser degree applicable to all knowledge and science of all kinds, even theological, in all their individual branches, and can be very easily shown to be both reasonable and true. And it may be added, or rather it is necessary to add, that every one of all the branches of all Of them has a very manifest tendency towards despotism to impose its sway and way of thinking upon the whole world. At various intervals during the present century speculation has been indulged in, and more or less lively discussion has taken place about the great benefit it would confer on uni versal humanity, were all the weights and measures of the whole earth arranged on the same standard. The universal standard proposed has been, of course, the metrical system, which had been elaborated by French sen/ants who most pro bably thought they had arrived at such a state of knowledge that they were able to establish the foundations of all science of all kinds and for all time, upon the most sure and most durable principles. These periods of metrical fever, so to Speak, seem to come on without any apparent immediately exciting cause, and some people succumb to the disease, others do not, just the same as in the cases of cholera, influenza, plague, etc. Whether some species of inoculation for it may be discovered, or whether it will be found that an unlimited attack is really perfect health, will most probably be found out in the course of time, although it may be some centuries hence. What is of interest to under stand at the present time is, what are the benefits to be derived from the proposed universal standard of weights and measures, and how they are to be attained. An Introduction to Astronomy (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from An Introduction to Astronomy As now arranged, the first chapters are devoted to a discus sion of the earth and its motions. They present splendid examples of the characteristics and methods of science, and amply illustrate the care with which scientific theories are established. The conclusions which are set forth are bound up with the development of science from the dawn of recorded history to the recent experiments on the rigidity and the elas ticity of the earth. They show how closely various sciences are interlocked, and how much an understanding of the earth depends upon its relations to the sky. They lead naturally to a more formal treatment of the celestial sphere and a study of the constellations. A familiarity with the brighter stars and the more conspicuous constellations is regarded as important. One who has become thoroughly acquainted with them will always experience a thrill when he looks up at night into a cloudless sky. The Orbs of Heaven

Book Description

Excerpt from The Orbs of Heaven: Or, the Planetary and Stellar Worlds; A Popular Exposition of the Great Discoveries and Theories of Modern Astronomy The hope was not groundless - subscriptions poured in, though not without difficulty - a large refractive telescope was purchased, and a piece of ground was generously given by a private individual for the site of an observatory. The work was pushed rapidly forward. In February, 1845, the great telescope safely reached the city of Cincinnati; and in March the building was ready for its reception. Cosmology

Book Description

Excerpt from Cosmology: A Treatise Defining a New Theory of the Construction and Operation of the Universe It will be found to be almost strictly confined to de fining and proving the theories, and entirely free from dissertation, and almost of observation and remark. In inditing the work, I have used that most excel lent work, Popular Astronomy, by Professor 0. M. Mitchel, as my text-book, which has been a material aid to me. Astronomy Corrected

Book Description

Excerpt from Astronomy Corrected: The Old Theories Concerning the Creation, and the Causes of the Motions of the Solar System, Shown to Be Error; The Better Theory of Those Creations and Motions Nearly all astronomers have, to a great ex tent, satisfied themselves that existing theo ries concerning the manner of the creation and the motions of the bodies of our solar system are true, and seem to have adopted the conclusions common with all educated classes, that what has been learned, or what has supposed to have been learned, concern ing this system, includes nearly all, if not quite all, there is to be discovered with re spect to those creations and those motions. Astronomy of the Bible (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Astronomy of the Bible The volume here offered to the public contains the last finished astronomical work of Professor Mitchel; and, with those that he published before his death, constitutes a series which, if not exhaustive of the accepted divisions of the science, presents, in outline, its great physical features and its ethical relations. The Planetary and Stellar Worlds, published in 1848, contained a popular exposition of the important discoveries and splendid theories of modern astronomy. It traced the progress of the great science from the primitive ages, showing how, little by little, the true theory dawned upon the feeble mind of man, fearful and long unwilling to receive it; it presented the great laws, with copious and eloquent illustration; it ofi'ered clear solu tions of the wondrous problems; discussed the discovery of new planets and the characteristics of the cometary world; displayed the grandeur of the scale upon which the universe is built, and showed the benevolent provisions for its perma nent stability.
