Topics in Groups and Geometry

Book Description

This book provides a detailed exposition of a wide range of topics in geometric group theory, inspired by Gromov’s pivotal work in the 1980s. It includes classical theorems on nilpotent groups and solvable groups, a fundamental study of the growth of groups, a detailed look at asymptotic cones, and a discussion of related subjects including filters and ultrafilters, dimension theory, hyperbolic geometry, amenability, the Burnside problem, and random walks on groups. The results are unified under the common theme of Gromov’s theorem, namely that finitely generated groups of polynomial growth are virtually nilpotent. This beautiful result gave birth to a fascinating new area of research which is still active today. The purpose of the book is to collect these naturally related results together in one place, most of which are scattered throughout the literature, some of them appearing here in book form for the first time. In this way, the connections between these topics are revealed, providing a pleasant introduction to geometric group theory based on ideas surrounding Gromov's theorem. The book will be of interest to mature undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics who are familiar with basic group theory and topology, and who wish to learn more about geometric, analytic, and probabilistic aspects of infinite groups.

Classes of Finite Groups

Book Description

This book covers the latest achievements of the Theory of Classes of Finite Groups. It introduces some unpublished and fundamental advances in this Theory and provides a new insight into some classic facts in this area. By gathering the research of many authors scattered in hundreds of papers the book contributes to the understanding of the structure of finite groups by adapting and extending the successful techniques of the Theory of Finite Soluble Groups.

Algebras, Representations and Applications

Book Description

This volume contains contributions from the conference on "Algebras, Representations and Applications" (Maresias, Brazil, August 26-September 1, 2007), in honor of Ivan Shestakov's 60th birthday. The collection of papers presented here is of great interest to graduate students and researchers working in the theory of Lie and Jordan algebras and superalgebras and their representations, Hopf algebras, Poisson algebras, Quantum Groups, Group Rings and other topics.

Advances in Algebra and Combinatorics

Book Description

This volume is a compilation of lectures on algebras and combinatorics presented at the Second International Congress in Algebra and Combinatorics. It reports on not only new results, but also on open problems in the field. The proceedings volume is useful for graduate students and researchers in algebras and combinatorics. Contributors include eminent figures such as V Artamanov, L Bokut, J Fountain, P Hilton, M Jambu, P Kolesnikov, Li Wei and K Ueno.

An Introduction to Finite Projective Planes

Book Description

Text for both beginning and advanced undergraduate and graduate students covers finite planes, field planes, coordinates in an arbitrary plane, central collineations and the little Desargues' property, the fundamental theorem, and non-Desarguesian planes. 1968 edition.

Combinatorial and Computational Algebra

Book Description

This volume presents articles based on the talks at the International Conference on Combinatorial and Computational Algebra held at the University of Hong Kong (China). The conference was part of the Algebra Program at the Institute of Mathematical Research and the Mathematics Department at the University of Hong Kong. Topics include recent developments in the following areas: combinatorial and computational aspects of group theory, combinatorial and computational aspects of associative and nonassociative algebras, automorphisms of polynomial algebras and the Jacobian conjecture, and combinatorics and coding theory. This volume can serve as a solid introductory guide for advanced graduate students, as well as a rich and up-to-date reference source for contemporary researchers in the field.
