Book Description

This volume is based on the proceedings of the COSPAR/SCOR/ IUCRM Symposium "Oceanography From Space" held in May 1980 in Venice, Italy. COSPAR (The Committee for Space Research) suggested holding a joint symposium with SCOR (The Scientific Committee for Oceanic Research) as a major review of space oceanography. Since this meeting fitted well with a series of colloquia organized by the IUCRM (The Inter-Union Commission on Radio Meteorology), these three bodies joined in sponsoring the meeting. The conference was hald 16 years after the first discussions of possible spaceborne observations of the ocean at a meeting organized in 1964 in Woods Hole. Gifford'Ewing was then keen to see oceanography benefit from the new satellite technology being developed, and he begins this volume by noting that most of the suggestions put forward in 1964 have now, at last, been successfully demonstrated in practice. The papers that follow show the variety of measurement techniques available or possible, and many of the types of studies in which they can be used. Papers are arranged in a general section, and in 6 specialized sections each of which starts with a brief introduction summarizing important results.

This volume contains the proceedings from the COSPAR Colloquium on "Space Remote Sensing of Subtropical Oceans" which took place between 12 and 16 September, 1996, at the Institute of Oceanography of the National Taiwan University. Included are contributions addressing the issue, from scientific points of views, of why the first scientific satellite of Taiwan, ROCSAT-1, should be equipped with the Ocean Colour Imager (OCI) for oceanographic investigations.




The Application of Remote Sensing Technology to Marine Fisheries


Book Description

The science and technology of remote sensing is introduced in terms of its history, concepts and language, and its application to the exploitation and management of marine fisheries. The physics of electromagnetic radiation is reviewed with reference to atmospheric and target interactions. The variety of sensor platforms and sensor types are described, the latter in the context of either global or sequential acquisition systems. Environmental satellites, their associated sensors and the techniques of digital image processing also are reviewed. Direct and indirect applications of remore sensing technology to fisheries are described in general, followed by a series of specific case studies. Recommended reference material, a glossary of terms and acronyms, sources of oceanographic satellite data and a selected list of training institutions conclude this manual.
