Nineteenth Annual Report of the Insurance Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, January 1, 1874, Vol. 1

Book Description

Excerpt from Nineteenth Annual Report of the Insurance Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, January 1, 1874, Vol. 1: Fire and Marine Insurance The deficiency referred to is most conspicuous in the returns of Companies chartered in other States and countries. These have generally diminished their risks and losses, while ih creasing their premium receipts. The late disastrous experi ence of Foreign Companies doing business in this country, particularly, has induced them to exercise the greatest cau tion in writing American risks, and leading in some cases to an extensive cancellation of policies. But the business of Massachusetts Companies for 1873 exhibits an apparent in crease, due not only to their general recuperation and recov ery Of local patronage, but also to the fact that a large amount of business transacted by the failed Companies does not appear in the returns of 1872. But irrespective of the latter circumstance, the manifest growth of local business is the more gratifying, in View of the fact that the operations Of many of the newly organized Home Companies cover but a portion of the year under review. Fifty-Fifth Annual Report of the Insurance Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, January 1, 1910, Vol. 2

Book Description

Excerpt from Fifty-Fifth Annual Report of the Insurance Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, January 1, 1910, Vol. 2: Life, Miscellaneous, Assessment and Fraternal Insurance One of the marked changes in the laws relating to insurance made by the Legislature of the present year was the enactment of the statute providing standard provisions for health and accident poli cies. This act goes into effect J an. 1, 1911, and is substantially like the law enacted in New York the present year. This act is the result of work done by the insurance commissioners of the various States, who, seeing that policies issued by accident companies were in many respects unsatisfactory, determined to draft a bill and offer it for consideration to the Legislatures of their several States. It is expected that many other States besideslnew York and Massachu setts will enact this bill into law, and thus give practical uniform legislation on this question in a very large proportion of the States. This will be in the interest of the companies as well as the policy holders, and is simply a step in the direction of uniform legislation, which should be followed, and doubtless will be followed, by other attempts on the part of the insurance commissioners to pave the way for harmonizing the essential provisions of the insurance laws of the various State-s as far as practicable. Forty-Sixth Annual Report of the Insurance Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, January 1, 1901, Vol. 2

Book Description

Excerpt from Forty-Sixth Annual Report of the Insurance Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, January 1, 1901, Vol. 2: Life, Casualty and Assessment Insurance These investments, of so great volume and variety, necessa rily participate in the character of all the sound and reliable properties of the country; and, although there have been and may be periods of depression which affect nominally all values, there exists no necessity for any changes of investment on that account by the companies when the wave passes they are found again in the same general condition as the average of the substantial investments of the community. Probably there is no other class of institutions holding large trusts less sub ject to sudden and forcible conversion or change of invest ments than the life companies, and hence none able to show better average earnings and results and in the report of inter est earned during the year, the rate per cent. Realized shows no material variation from that of recent years, and that the reserves in this respect are well protected. So far, then, as the amount of property to protect the policy obligations and the mortality and interest experiences are con cerned, the conditions are favorable and satisfactory. The volume of business done and the grand totals of amounts in force show relatively the same increase as in the previous year, and are indicative of active and healthy conditions, and that with return of business activity there will be no lagging of enterprise or lack of progress.
