Not Out

Book Description

Since Dexter's parents' death, he's been living with his aunt in her Scarborough apartment. Even though it's been two years, Dexter is still struggling to control his anger and so far the best way for him to do this is through sports. Then one day he snaps and attacks the pitcher during a baseball game, and Dex suddenly finds himself off the team. His aunt gives him two options: find another sports team, or go back to trombone lessons. But no other coach seems willing to give Dexter and his now-legendary temper a chance . . . Dexter's best friend, Atul, suggests that he try out for the school's cricket squad, but Dexter's not so sure. Despite his Carribean heritage, he knows almost nothing about cricket, and thinks it's a wimpy sport anyway. But Dex's batting skills make him a shoo-in, and to his surprise, he even starts to enjoy himself -- until the squad captain, jealous of Dex's natural skill, makes his life even more difficult than before.

Not Out!

Book Description

Chronicling the Indian Premier League (IPL), India’s first sports league and the most controversial ever, this book explores the intricacies of the business and the acceptability of the IPL to take a closer look at the various scams that have plagued it. It is a blow-by-blow description of the highs, lows, and future of the IPL that has, possibly, redefined the way the rest of the world perceives India. It analyses what the league got right and what it has got wrong and why. And, what the IPL and its owner/promoter—the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)—could have done to sell the sport and build on the popularity of cricket in India, but didn’t. Analysing the spot-fixing scandal, the conflict of interest controversy, the specific issues concerning the teams, the complicated interplay between the BCCI and the IPL, this thought-provoking work brings to light many untold stories of cricket in India.

Down (But Not Out) in Beijing and Shanghai

Book Description

I have for many years, like many people, harboured the ambition to write a book. For me the glass is always half full and with the experiences I have been through I finally plucked up the courage to put pen to paper. This book was written partly out of the desire to share these experiences and partly to bring a smile to the faces of the readers who may or may not have had similar experiences. It was built around a lessons learnt process of what I describe as a "e;perfect storm"e; in terms of what could go wrong when naively getting into something you are just not prepared for. It is far from being aimed at business people as day to day life is relevant to the visitor and the business person alike. Whilst this book is written about experiences in China there is a much deeper message out there of the importance of culture and business naivety and I am sure similar experiences will be relevant for others in any part of the world. China is not a unique place to do business and live, however it does come with cultural differences that many in the West have no ability to comprehend, nor the desire to. I hope you enjoy and finish this book with a smile on your face and for all of you on a long haul flight or journey, hopefully a lot closer to your destination.

Out of Exile, not out of Babylon

Book Description

Exile and the disruptioon of the exilic period are prominent features in scholarly reconstructions of what influenced the shaping of biblical books and the development of theological thinking. The Babylonian golah community, as an exilic community, is credited by a growing number of scholars with influencing large parts of the Hebrew Bible. This study addresses the question whether the redactions show signs of an exilic mindset (first generation exiles) or are better understood as a reflection of a diaspora mindset (second/third and subsequent generations). This study also reviews all known archaeological diaspora findings from Mesopotamia in the pre-Hellenistic period (aided by insights from Elephantine) in order to build an as comprehensive as possible picture of Jewish diaspora life in Mesopotamia.

I Was Knocked down but Not Out! How My Faith Got Me Through!!!

Book Description

The intent of this book is to serve three goals. The first being to act as an opportunity for the world to see Mr. Matthews as a man who has lived a full life that has had great experiences, adventure, and opportunities while also allowing the readers to understand how having faith through life's storms is critical. If only a single reader can walk away with a better understanding that God will never put more on us than we can bear, then the purpose of the book was met. The second goal was to let others know that the rules of the game of life change upon whom the rules best serve, and no matter what, you must be accountable for your actions and be prepared to handle the consequences of your actions. While others may conspire to bring you down, you have the ability to make decisions to not allow them to do so. The last goal was to have true reconciliation by telling my story to ensure that those only knew my name would now know my story, and I'm sure that by now, most of them would see they would have quit long ago had they walked in my shoes for just a short time.

Down But Not Out

Book Description

Maurice 'Moggy' Mayne was a cricket-loving air gunner in the Second World War, with a pretty girlfriend back home in rural England. His turret was in a Bristol Beaufort and his pilot had to fly with almost suicidal bravery at giant German warships before releasing the torpedo. No wonder Moggy's first pilot cracked up and his second liked to drink. When he was shot down, Moggy miraculously survived – unlike his best friend Stan. Moggy was sent to Stalag Luft VIIIB, an infamous German POW camp near the Polish border, where he was badly treated. Fearing losing his beloved girlfriend Sylvia forever, and risking recapture and execution, he saw the chance to escape alone, thus beginning an epic journey through Nazi-occupied Germany. As the Gestapo shot other escaped British servicemen, Moggy Mayne came agonisingly close to lasting freedom. Instead, as the war neared its end, he had to face the horrors of the 'long march' west – and he felt his life slipping away. Would he ever see his Sylvia again?
