It was an April evening, but the dying winter, in a last rally, had gripped the earth with a bitter frost, so that the muddy footpath under the trees that crowned the hills had turned to the hardness of stone, and beside the path the dead leaves, among which some creature rustled in frightened retreat, were stiff and unyielding. There at the edge of the wood, where the path dipped downwards, it was very still, and the air clear and keen.
