Aside from the recognized prominence of the State in furnishing great generals to lead the armies of the Union to vic tory, no loyal State furnished more soldiers in proportion to population, and none surpassed Ohio in the promptness and vigor with which she responded to every call for troops. Not only did Ohio furnish to the Govern ment at Washington her full quota, but, according to the lowest estimates, she exceeded her quota by soldiers. In this respect, Massachusetts and Illinois alone, of all the States, can boast as proud a record, and both States have long since published complete rosters of all their regiments engaged in the great struggle.
