Fifty years ago, in November 1947, Brown & Root helped Kerr-McGee build the first out-of-sight-land offshore platform that produced oil. The date is widely celebrated as the birth of the modern offshore industry. In the years since this historic occasion, Brown & Root has continued to pioneer in the design and construction of offshore pipelines and platforms. Along with the rest of the offshore industry, the company has helped develop technology capable of finding and producing oil in deepwater and in harsh environments around the world.This history puts a human face on the process of technological change. Using the words of many of those who took part in Brown & Root's offshore activities, this book recounts their efforts to find practical ways to recover offshore oil. Summary: The OffshoreGrid project proves the financial benefits of building a meshed European grid offshore and outlines two cost efficient designs. Contents: Offshore grids, connecting North and Baltic Sea wind farms and electricity consumers, can be built substantially cheaper than expected. Building “hub connections” at sea instead of using cables to connect single wind farms individually to the shore will result in lower investment costs of 14 billion Euros. Additionally if these hub connections would be combined with an even more interconnected “meshed grid”, the necessary additional costs of 7 billion Euros would be compensated by 16 to 21 billion Euros of additional benefits over 25 years of grid operation.

Energy from wave and tidal power is a key component of current policies for renewable sources of energy. This book provides the first comprehensive exploration of legal, economic, and social issues related to the emerging ocean energy industry, in particular wave and tidal energy technologies. This industry is rapidly developing, and considerable technical literature has developed around the technology. However, it is shown that challenges relating to regulation and policy are major impediments to industry development, and these aspects have not previously been sufficiently highlighted and studied. While offshore wind energy, sited in the oceans but not strictly derived from the ocean, is not the primary focus of the book, there is also discussion of the similarities and differences between offshore wind and wave and tidal power policy dimensions.
