A Sea of Glass

Book Description

"The author makes an eloquent plea for marine biodiversity conservation."—Library Journal "Harvell seems to channel the devotion that motivated the Blaschkas."—The Guardian Winner of the 2016 National Outdoor Book Award, Environment Category It started with a glass octopus. Dusty, broken, and all but forgotten, it caught Drew Harvell’s eye. Fashioned in intricate detail by the father-son glassmaking team of Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka, the octopus belonged to a menagerie of unusual marine creatures that had been packed away for decades in a storage unit. More than 150 years earlier, the Blaschkas had been captivated by marine invertebrates and spun their likenesses into glass, documenting the life of oceans untouched by climate change and human impacts. Inspired by the Blaschkas’ uncanny replicas, Harvell set out in search of their living counterparts. In A Sea of Glass, she recounts this journey of a lifetime, taking readers along as she dives beneath the ocean's surface to a rarely seen world, revealing the surprising and unusual biology of some of the most ancient animals on the tree of life. On the way, we glimpse a century of change in our ocean ecosystems and learn which of the living matches for the Blaschkas’ creations are, indeed, as fragile as glass. Drew Harvell and the Blaschka menagerie are the subjects of the documentary Fragile Legacy, which won the Best Short Film award at the 2015 Blue Ocean Film Festival & Conservation Summit. A Sea of Glass Mingled with Fire

Book Description

If the sky should become a sea of glass mingled with fire, will you be ready? The sea of glass mingled with fire is symbolic to the holiness of God in wrath. The apostle John according to his revelation envisiond within the spirit of his mind, while he was in the Spirit on the Lord's day (the day in which the ultimate wrath of God will be poured out into the earth by the seven angels having the seven last plagues of Almighty God.) God will pour out his final ultimate plagues on the world of the ungodly in this earth! John in his revelation notes these seven angels with these plagues. Then the apostle envision the people of God as it were, "Standing by (on in some translations) a sea of glass mingled with fire. They had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his mark, and over his image, and over the number of his name. John saw them holding harps which Almighty God had given them. These redeemed people of God sang the song of Moses, and of the Lamb. As the children of Israel was delived by supernatural means as they crossed the Red Sea on dry ground, they after crossing through the sea, stood by the shore of the red Sea, and saw the Egyptians dead bodies laid out on the shore, after God had poured out his ultimate wrath upon them and had at the same identical time shown his loving mercy on the Israelites, for God fought for them that day as Pharoah and his mighty army persued them into the sea to destroy them. When the children of Israel had gotton to the Red Sea, they found themselves in the midst of an impossible situation: their enemies were all around them and Pharaoh and his army were behind them. They cried out to Moses and to God to deliver them out of a horrific situation of certain death! Moses cried out to God, and God rebuked Moses and instructed him to utilize the rod which was in his hand: Moses instructed the children of Israel to "Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord!" The people of God today are in this same postion spiritually speaking: we are waiting for the supernatural deliverance of Almighty God at the seventh trump of God announcing the coming of our deliverer Jesus Christ: for the trumpet will sound, and the dead in Christ shall rise immortal spirit, and we shall be changed and "Caught Up" together with them in the clouds, "to meet the Lord in the air," and we will forever be with the Lord. In the revelation of the apostle John, he has been projected within the spirit of his mind, by Almighty God, to this future day, shortly ahead of us, wherein the apostle envisions the people of God in their ultimate victory! Jesus will return at the worst time in the history of mankind (WWIII) just prior to the seven angels' pouring out into the earth the seven "last" plagues of Almighty God: the mercy of God, the pureness of God, and the holiness of God is represented by the sea's glass mingled with fire, the fire representing God's wrath mixed also in the sea of glass! My friend, if the sky should become a sea of glass, will you be ready? Jesus have instructed the people of God to remain continually in the state of radiness, "Be ye ready for you know not the day or the hour your Lord will come." Will you be ready?

Legend of Sea Glass

Book Description

Long, long ago there was a time when men did not venture into the deep ocean waters. It was believed that the world was flat and to sail beyond the horizon meant falling off the edge of the earth. So even though they were drawn to and fascinated by the ocean, men feared it. And as men lived their lives above the water, far beyond their view and in the ocean's deepest depths lived mysterious and magical sea creatures, half girl and half fish. These shy, gentle creatures were called mermaids and much loved by the ocean. And when men finally overcame their fear and ventured out to sea, risking disaster and even death, it was the mermaids who came to their rescue. Written by award-winning author Trinka Hakes Noble, this original legend explains the origin of sea glass, attributing it to the tears of mermaids, weeping for lives lost at sea.

There are several reasons why the hunt is so important to the sea glass seeker. Some find their Zen moments in the solitude and beauty of the hunt. Some collect to add color to their life. The history, mystery, and discovery of sea glass are also strong forces that draw collectors to shorelines around the world, looking for these pieces of physically and chemically weathered frosted glass. Whatever your reason for wanting to learn about and start your own collection of sea glass, the window for doing so is closing as pieces are becoming more elusive due to a growth in sea glass popularity and a decrease in recent glass bottle production. In The Ultimate Guide to Sea Glass, Beuke provides information that will help first-time seekers start new collections and veteran hunters learn more about their current sets.
