Excerpt from On Jurassic and Cretaceous Fossils From North-East Greenland As already mentioned above, the Danmark Expedition found Jurassic deposits on Hochstetter's Foreland, deposits that had hitherto been erroneously referred to the Tertiary system. The principal col lections of mesozoic, marine fossils were made, however, on Store Koldewey Island; not only were fossiliferous Jurassic deposits of somewhat different age found there, but also at one point interesting Neocomian deposits with a fauna-which is very nearly related to that 011 the east side of Kuhn Island. Mesozoic fossils were also found further north, in the district round Danmarks Havn, but only in boulders. These boulders are referable partly to the youngest Jurassic, partly to the oldest Cretaceous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Dinosaurs are one of the most spectacular groups of animals that have ever existed. Many were fantastic, bizarre creatures that still capture our imagination: the super-predator Tyrannosaurus, the plate-backed Stegosaurus, and the long-necked, long-tailed Diplodocus. Dinosaurs: The Ultimate Guide to How They Lived taps into our enduring interest in dinosaurs, shedding new light on different dinosaur groups. Leading paleontology experts Darren Naish and Paul Barrett trace the evolution, anatomy, biology, ecology, behavior, and lifestyle of a variety of dinosaurs. They also remind us that dinosaurs are far from extinct: they present evidence supporting the evolution of dinosaurs to birds that exist today as approximately ten thousand different species. Throughout their narrative Naish and Barrett reveal state-of-the-art new findings shaping our understanding of dinosaurs. Readers will discover, for example, how the use of CT-scanning enables scientists to look inside dinosaur skulls, thus gaining new insight into their brains and sense organs. Dinosaurs is a must-have for all those wanting to keep up to date about these dynamic, complicated creatures.

The beautiful spiral shells of these long-extinct marine invertebrates are among the most sought after and recognizable of fossils, yet little has been published about ammonites outside of geological journals. Neale Monks and Philip Palmer look at the latest ideas on ammonite biology and ecology to present this detailed picture of a once diverse and widespread group of animals. Though an ammonite looks like a nautilus, the animal inside the shell was most closely related to today's octopus, squid, and cuttlefish. The authors describe the evolution of ammonites and their relatives and explain how they created their shells and used them as flotation devices. All the major groups of ammonites are described and illustrated (as are many minor ones), and important material is included on anatomy, feeding, reproduction, and pathology. The 300-million-year existence of ammonites ended at around the same time that dinosaurs became extinct. Fortunately, ammonites were once so abundant that their fossilized shells can be readily found, and the authors provide a helpful guide to locating and collecting these unique fossils.

The paleontologist and professor of anatomy who co-discovered Tiktaalik, the “fish with hands,” tells a “compelling scientific adventure story that will change forever how you understand what it means to be human” (Oliver Sacks). By examining fossils and DNA, he shows us that our hands actually resemble fish fins, our heads are organized like long-extinct jawless fish, and major parts of our genomes look and function like those of worms and bacteria. Your Inner Fish makes us look at ourselves and our world in an illuminating new light. This is science writing at its finest—enlightening, accessible and told with irresistible enthusiasm.

Gives a general outline of the classification and evolution of fishes from early Palaeozoic times onwards. This work describes the GCR sites in Britain from which important fish fossils have been obtained. It also describes the origins of the earliest tetrapods and their amphibian descendants.
