On Mothering Multiples: Complexities and Possibilities

Book Description

Demeter Press took on the challenge of discussing multiples through On Mothering Multiples: Complexities and Possibilities, a book that promised to “(re)explore, (re)present, and make meaning of the process of conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and mothering experiences with multiples”. Under the editorship of Kathy Mantas, and through diverse contributions of research, artwork and narrative pieces, this topic is explored with diverse voices that elicit nuance towards a subject that often suffers from cliché and overt charm. Daring to taunt the reader who may be beguiled by the blessing of multiples with an unflinching look at subjects such as fetal demise, disability, post-partum depression, the beauty and the beast of the post-twin maternal body, and the society’s obsession and derision with multiples conceived through assistive reproductive technology, this book is a foundational text on the topic of the messiness of multiple births and mothering. This collection manages to be both intensely personal while maintaining the scholarly distance necessary to offer an important contribution to the field of motherhood studies as well as intersecting with grief work and disability studies. Published in 2016, this book remains provocative, and stealth in how it unfurls its wisdom, providing both clarity and further

Middle Grounds: Essays on Midlife Mothering

Book Description

Although motherhood writings are rich and emerging, the available literature on midlife motherhood and mothering is incomplete and often presented from a narrow perspective. Middle Grounds: Essays on Midlife Mothering fills this gap, widening the lens on a sociological phenomenon that is expanding in the twenty first century. It brings together scholarly and creative essays from diverse disciplines and cultural perspectives to reflect a more contemporary viewpoint — that motherhood and mothering is not limited by the stages of life or chronological age. It echoes distinct voices speaking about experiences that represent a global reality for midlife mothering practices. In essence, this collection demonstrates that everything can transpire in the middle period of a woman’s life. Thus, in midlife, we encounter a broad range of mothering experiences and practices, and ways of rep- resenting and expressing them

Interrogating Gendered Pathologies

Book Description

Interrogating Gendered Pathologies points out and critiques unjust patterns of pathology. Erin A. Frost and Michelle F. Eble assemble a transdisciplinary approach from/to technologies, rhetorics, philosophies, epistemologies, and biomedical data to consider the effects of biomedicine’s gendered norms on people’s lives. Using a range of complementary and intersectional theoretical approaches, contributors ask questions about rhetoric’s role in healthcare and how it differs depending on patient embodiment and the ways nonnormative bodies are pathologized. These chapters engage common narratives about the ways in which gender in healthcare is secondary and highlights the stories of people who have battled to prioritize their own bodies through extraordinary difficulties. Employing a multiplicity of voices, the book represents a number of different perspectives on what it might look like to return health and medical data to embodied experience, to consider the effects of gendered and intersectional biomedical norms on lived realities, and to subvert the power of institutions in ways that move us toward biomedical justice. This collection contributes to the burgeoning field of health and medical rhetorics by rhetorically and theoretically intervening in what are often seen as objective and neutral decisions related to the body and to scientific and medical data about bodies. Interrogating Gendered Pathologies will be of interest to feminist scholars in the field of rhetoric and writing studies, specifically those in the rhetorics of health and medicine, as well as scholars of technical communication, feminist studies, gender studies, technoscience studies, and bioethics. Grandmothers and Grandmothering: Creative and Critical Contemplations in Honour of our Women Elders

Book Description

Today, more and more grandmothers around the world are taking on varied responsibilities and many roles, sometimes concurrently. Consequently, grandmothers continue to play, as in the past, an influential role not only in the lives of their grandchildren, but also in our communities and in society more broadly. Grandmothers and Grandmothering: Creative and Critical Contemplations in Honour of our Women Elders, as the title suggests, seeks to pay homage to our grandmothers and their contributions to society. As well, it aims to explore the textured and complex phenomena of grandmothering from a range of disciplines and cultural perspectives. Our hope is that this collection challenges preconceived notions of what it means to be a grandmother and provides insight into the multifaceted nature of grandmothering.

Spawning Generations

Book Description

"As queerspawn, we have often presented our lives to conform to other people's expectations of what has been difficult for us, and what we have risen above. We have felt the pressure to be perfect in order to prove to the skeptics, the disbelievers, the pessimists, the straight-up haters, that we are a social experiment gone 'right,' producing 'well-adjusted' children. This anthology is about carving out a space for our voices. It is an attempt to create space for our stories without the pressures of having to conform to a narrative that demands perfection, that demands proving to on-lookers, both outside of and within queer communities, that we turned out 'all right.' If you are looking for that narrative in this collection, you won't find it. Instead you will find voices that ask: What does it mean to be 'well-adjusted' in a world that teaches us to lie about our imperfections and to believe that we are alone in those imperfections? What does it means to be 'well adjusted' in a world that is ripe with problems and fraught with violence? What does it mean to be resilient in a world that will not allow us to reveal our imperfections for fear of putting our family's safety at risk? We are in fact, and all at once, resilient, imperfect, and fiercely protective of our families. We exist in a world of grey and this anthology is a reflection of our actual experiences, airbrushed for no one - at times humorous, light, joyous, prideful, and hopeful, at other times sad, and full of grief, guilt, shame, denial, resentment, and anger."--

Unimaginable

Book Description

There is no way to begin without telling you the saddest part of the story. It's a love story, and it begins with a positive pregnancy test. But, it doesn't end with a baby."Everything was right on schedule in Brooke Taylor's meticulously planned world. She had checked off every box-the husband, the house, the dogs, the graduate degree, the (modest) savings account-and now, positive pregnancy test in hand, she had checked the most anticipated box of all. As a young couple with every dream seemingly within their grasp, the potential for looming tragedy wasn't even on their radar. The death of a child? That was an unfathomable abstraction, a terrible tragedy that could only happen to someone else. And then, in one fateful moment, the unimaginable became their reality. After 34 weeks of a textbook, uneventful pregnancy while expecting their first daughter, Eliza, in 2010, Brooke and her husband David were shocked when she went into labor weeks before her due date-and then absolutely blindsided when they arrived at the hospital only to be told that their beloved "Baby Duck" no longer had a heartbeat. This is the story of what comes next: of learning to live with a broken heart that keeps on beating, of picking up the pieces amidst the devastation of earth-shattering grief, and of finding a way to love life again-even when nothing goes according to plan. This is the story of surviving the death of a child, navigating the complexities of life after pregnancy loss, and discovering that grief can somehow become a part of our life without overtaking it completely.Unimaginable: Life after baby loss examines what it means to be a parent bereaved through stillbirth, and traces one mother's path back to a hopeful life.
