Nature in Otokar Březina's Work

Book Description

The aim of this monograph is to outline the symbolism, practical use and contextual meaning of the terms, metaphors and names from the field of natural sciences in the art of Otokar Březina. The present volume of nine studies written between 2003 and 2013 (O. Březina’s Galium, Ear of Grain in the Work of Otokar Březina, Vitis vinifera L. ssp. sativa /DC./ Hegi in the Works of Otokar Březina, Trees in the Poetic Works of Otokar Březina, Flora in the Work of Otokar Březina, Flowers in the Work of Otokar Březina, Otokar Březina’s “Geographical” Geology?, Březina’s Stones and Gemstones, Březina’s Stones and Gemstones II) is devoted to selected problems concerning the images, metaphors and generally the use of terminology from natural sciences in the poems, essays and correspondence of the prominent poet of Czech and European symbolism, Otokar Březina (1868–1929). The surprisingly frequently and skilfully used terminology from the sphere of natural sciences is an irreplaceable component part of the poet’s work and is perceived as its integral part both by the readers’ and specialists’ public. The aim of the book Nature in Otokar Březina’s Work is to mediate Březina’s work to foreign readers and at the same time to propagate the constantly good name of Czech literature beyond the geopolitical, geographical and language sphere of exclusively Czech milieu
