Out of the Darkness of Academics Into the Light of Jesus Christ-

Book Description

This book is about the nuances of college life as viewed from a Christian perspective. Dr. Martin came to the conclusion that the quest for human knowledge is endless in its own seductive way. Our educational bastions are an arms length from the church; yet it appears the church is being neglected by many who labor in the halls of academics by their lack of participation in church. It is durable and manageable for one to participate in both the educational process and the church, however, these individuals are becoming a rare breed and that is why Dr. Martin challenges the educator to return to his/her spiritual roots. Dr. Martin asserts spiritual values are a reality and to be negligent here is without excuse.

Stepping Out of Darkness Into the Light

Book Description

Stepping Out of Darkness into the Light is a book of action. The Word of the Lord says, "faith without works is dead" (Jms.2:20,26). This book assists God's people in the appointed time to move out from the comfort zone and into a faith walk where the power of God resides. Whenever there is need for change, there is also resistance to change. This resistance presents evidence of fear. Since fear is the absent of faith, it must be dealt with by any means necessary. The Bible says that without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb.11:6). Therefore, it is pertinent that we be relieved of this fear, whatever the cost. The absolute absence of fear will probably never be accomplished in our human state of being. However, there are some steps that we can take that will alleviate many of the symptoms and allow us to move to the next level in God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Stepping Out of Darkness into the Light ushers the reader into the presence of God beginning with ten chapters of devotional reading. Devotional time spent with God is preparation for the coming events at any given time. The segments that follow, introduce a transitory method utilizing biblical steps that bring the readers into an even more intimate relationship with God. When we are confident about our relationship with God, we are better able to represent Him in our daily walk. The world's need for peace is more prevalent than ever before. While God's people may not be in position to bring peace to the world, we can start with ourselves. Utilizing the steps presented in this book will assist in uncovering the dark places in our lives and stepping into the light, one step at a time.

Out of Darkness Into Light

Book Description

Believers in Jesus, as we read in the Scriptures, are "all children of the light, and children of the day," and are privileged to "walk in the light, as God is the light," God Himself being "their everlasting light, and their God their glory." Thus "walking in the light," they "have fellowship one with another;" and more than this, "with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ." Abiding in this light and in this fellowship, their "joy is full," "out of weakness they are made strong," in all conditions of existence they find perfect content, and are "more than conquerors through Him that hath loved us," and "having all sufficiency for all things, are abundantly furnished for every good work." If all this is not true of any believer, it is because he is living below his revealed privileges, and is thus living because he does not "know the things which are freely given us of God." It contradicts every true idea of Christian character, to suppose that a true believer in Christ will "walk in darkness," knowing that he may "walk in the light;" will remain weak, knowing that he may be girded with "everlasting strength;" and will continue "carnal, sold under sin," knowing that he may enjoy "the glorious liberty of the sons of God." The specific and exclusive object of the following treatise is to make known to all who would know and understand their privileges as "the sons of God" and "believers in Jesus," the forms of divine knowledge above referred to. To the prayerful examination of all who are "walking in the light," or are inquiring after the light, the work is commended, with the fervent desire and prayer of the author, that "their joy may be full." ASA MAHAN (1799-1889) was America's foremost Christian educator, reformer, philosopher, and pastor. He was founding president of two colleges and one university, where he was able to inspire numerous reforms, publish authoritative philosophical texts, and promote powerful revivals like his close associate Charles Finney. He led the way on all important fronts while being severely persecuted. He introduced the new curriculum later adopted by Harvard, was the first to instruct and grant liberal college degrees to white and colored women, advised Lincoln during the Civil War, and among many other remarkable achievements, was a father to the early evangelical and holiness movements.

God and Galileo

Book Description

"A devastating attack upon the dominance of atheism in science today." Giovanni Fazio, Senior Physicist, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics The debate over the ultimate source of truth in our world often pits science against faith. In fact, some high-profile scientists today would have us abandon God entirely as a source of truth about the universe. In this book, two professional astronomers push back against this notion, arguing that the science of today is not in a position to pronounce on the existence of God—rather, our notion of truth must include both the physical and spiritual domains. Incorporating excerpts from a letter written in 1615 by famed astronomer Galileo Galilei, the authors explore the relationship between science and faith, critiquing atheistic and secular understandings of science while reminding believers that science is an important source of truth about the physical world that God created.

Light

Book Description

That an unknown manuscript by C. S. Lewis should suddenly appear two decades after his death is remarkable. That it turns out to be a version of a previously published Lewis short story which some have accused of being a forgery, makes it a mystery. C. S. Lewis's "Light" manuscript appeared out of nowhere in 1985 after a different version of the story was published in 1977. Could "Light" be the final version of that story, the missing polished text which should have been published all along? And does it disprove or inflame the accusations of forgery? Charlie W. Starr explores the questions and reveals the truth that what Lewis scholars have previously believed about the story's origins is largely inaccurate, and that the insights into Lewis's thinking which "Light" reveals provide a new key to understanding some of Lewis's most profound ideas. "As literary journalism, both investigative and critical, it is top shelf." James Como, author of Remembering C. S. Lewis "Starr's book explores a vitally important theme in Lewis's work - light." Will Vaus, author of Speaking of Jack: A C. S. Lewis Discussion Guide "Starr has done us all a great service ... I can't recommend this book highly enough." Adam Barkman, author of C. S. Lewis and Philosophy as a Way of Life "Starr shines a new and illuminating light on one of Lewis's most intriguing stories." Michael Ward, author of Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C. S. Lewis Charlie W. Starr is professor of English and Humanities at Kentucky Christian University.
