Unlike such romanticized renegades as Robin Hood and Jesse James, there is another kind of outlaw hero, one who lives between the law and his own personal code. In times of crisis, when the law proves inadequate, the liminal outlaw negotiates between the social imperatives of the community and his innate sense of right and wrong. While society requires his services, he necessarily remains apart from it in self-preservation. The modern outlaw hero of film and television is rooted in the knight errant, whose violent exploits are tempered by his solitude and devotion to a higher ideal. The Making of an American Outlaw Hero


Book Description

For over 100 years, Jesse Woodson James, an outlaw and Missouri native, has been the subject of countless newspaper and magazine articles, dime novels, and television and film plots. It has been left to historians, fans, geneticists, and James' descendants to discern where the truth ends and the legends begin. This study attempts to show that the late nineteenth-century print media, especially Missouri newspapers, were the originators of a literary or popular legend that socially reconstructed James' outlaw reality. Through the use of social construction of reality theories, this study seeks to understand how the post-Civil War crisis in Missouri impacted James and Missouri newspapers' coverage of James' crimes and his death. A major goal here is to determine whether the print media created the legend by infusing their stories with elements of oral folklore, including Richard Meyer's twelve outlaw hero motifs. More importantly, analysis of thirty-six, late nineteenth-century Missouri newspapers, five newspapers nationwide, and dime novels may shed light on how the popular legend of an outlaw folk hero spreads. Perhaps by understanding how the print media depicted James while he was alive and seventeen years after his death in 1882, we also may be understand at least one reason why society and to some extent, modern media are still fascinated with James.
