This manuscript focuses on the development of hybrid city-country (penurban) landscapes around large urban areas which mesh stylized countryside with functional links to the cities. These landscapes are central to American mindsets as they combine the dreams, expectations, and experiences of the nation in expressive cultural landscapes. An interpretive-analytical methodology is used in this single-authored, multidisciplinary work which draws on insights from history, American Studies, social sciences, urban studies, and environmental studies, and cultural studies in order to portray lifestyle and settlement phenomena overlooked by single disciplinary fields. Telling the story of how penurban landscapes emerged, the work blends original research with a re-reading of existing work to understand developing lifestyle and settlement patterns. The book aims at readers in history, urban studies, environmental studies, consumerism and American Studies.

Immerse yourself in the stunning flora and fauna, trails, ruins and other wonders the Patapsco Valley State Park provides. Patapsco Valley State Park is nestled in four Maryland counties - Carroll, Baltimore, Howard, and Anne Arundel. From its humble beginnings in 1907 as a 43-acre forest reserve to its expansion to over 16,000 acres today, this hidden gem has become a refuge for wild animals and native vegetation and a retreat from suburban and city life. With its eight developed recreation areas and over 200 miles of trails, more than a million visitors annually explore this vast area rich with history. Visitors have discovered the park's National Historic Landmark, the Thomas Viaduct, which remains in use today with modern trains passing over the first multiple-arch stone railroad viaduct in the United States. Other marvels from the past include remains of 19th-century mills and mill towns, the Civilian Conservation Corps' Camp Tydings, and the popular and scenic swinging bridge. Visitors to the park today continue to experience the joy of the great outdoors like millions before them.

For 100 years, the Maryland State Forests and Parks Services have maintained and provided public access to Maryland's most beautiful and historic places. These include Assateague, Elk Neck, the first completed Washington Monument, Fort Frederick, Green Ridge, and Swallow Falls. Maryland's Forests and Parks: A Century of Progress captures the development of the state's forests and parks from their inception in 1906 to the present day. Take a journey with first state forester Fred W. Besley: witness his pioneering efforts to protect Maryland's forests, promote outdoor recreation, and establish the state's earliest public lands along the Patapsco River and throughout Western Maryland. Experience subsequent endeavors of the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Department of Forests and Parks to build on Besley's examples to create one of the finest state park and forest systems in the nation. Finally explore the efforts of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to fulfill the mission envisioned by Besley a century ago: to protect, enhance, and restore Maryland's natural resources for the wise use and enjoyment of all citizens.
