Pathological Inebriety

Book Description

Excerpt from Pathological Inebriety: Its Causation and Treatment As I consider it of great importance that the causes and treatment of inebriety in its several forms should be properly understood, not only by the profession, but by the laity, I have consented to write an introductory note to this brochure by my friend and old pupil, Mr. Astley Cooper, who has often rendered me valuable assistance in dealing with this class of cases. Having read the manuscript, I am convinced that the views which he expounds as to the pathology of inebriety and the principles of treatment are characterized by sound sense, and are the result of ripe experience. In particular I would call special attention to the psychical treatment of inebriety and the methods he adopts with a view to establish and develop the power of self-control, without which mere isolation or drug treatment are unavailing. As, however, the work is written in plain and lucid style, I need not anticipate its arguments, but without further prologue heartily commend it to the reader.
