The book addresses the scientific debates on Rembrandt, Metsu, Vermeer, and Hoogstraten that are currently taking place in art history and cultural studies. These focus mainly on the representation of gender difference, the relationship between text and image, and the emotional discourse. They are also an appeal for art history as a form of cultural studies that analyses the semantic potential of art within discursive and social contemporary practices. Dutch painting of the seventeenth century reflects its relationship to visible reality. It deals with ambiguities and contradictions. As an avant-garde artistic media, it also contributes to the emergence of a subjectivity towards the modern “bourgeois”. It discards subject matter from its traditional fixation with iconology and evokes different imaginations and semantizations - aspects that have not been sufficiently taken into account in previous research. Radical wrongdoing can have devastating effects for entire communities, beyond individual trauma. Across cultures, different coping strategies that help victims to get on with their lives range from individual therapy to collective rituals and ceremonies. This new book distances itself from the predominantly individual take on forgiveness, and concentrates on its collective and cultural dimensions in a broad historical, religious and cultural context. By developing forgiveness as a particular speech act based on a precarious mutual acceptance between victims and perpetrators, the book suggests a new approach to forgiveness. Framed by this challenging reciprocity, forgiveness becomes an ongoing experiment in mutual understanding, which, to be successful, requires the imagination of a shared future. Rereading Aristotle's Rhetoric

In this collection edited by Alan G. Gross and Arthur E. Walzer, scholars in communication, rhetoric and composition, and philosophy seek to "reread" Aristotle's Rhetoric from a purely rhetorical perspective. So important do these contributors find the Rhetoric, in fact, that a core tenet in this book is that "all subsequent rhetorical theory is but a series of responses to issues raised by the central work". Gross and Walzer do not seek to renew the ancient quarrel between philosophy and rhetoric; rather, they call for a healthy division of labor, demanding that "purely rhetorical issues are genuine and must be explored". For that purpose all three books of the Rhetoric are essential. The essayists reflect on questions basic to rhetoric as a humanistic discipline.
