Pedestrian Crosswalk Signal Activation Demonstration

Book Description

This report presents a detailed description of the design, fabrication and installation of a new pedestrian crosswalk signal activation device. The prototype device had the unique capabilities of being able to vary crossing times for the benefit of elderly and disabled pedestrians, and of providing audible and visual signal status information. The device was installed by the City of Edmonton on a demonstration basis in February, 1987, in a downtown residential area. Technical and user evaluations of the prototype control device are included. Recommendations are made for the further development and manufacture of the device. Design drawings are provided.

Traffic Signal Timing Manual

Book Description

This report serves as a comprehensive guide to traffic signal timing and documents the tasks completed in association with its development. The focus of this document is on traffic signal control principles, practices, and procedures. It describes the relationship between traffic signal timing and transportation policy and addresses maintenance and operations of traffic signals. It represents a synthesis of traffic signal timing concepts and their application and focuses on the use of detection, related timing parameters, and resulting effects to users at the intersection. It discusses advanced topics briefly to raise awareness related to their use and application. The purpose of the Signal Timing Manual is to provide direction and guidance to managers, supervisors, and practitioners based on sound practice to proactively and comprehensively improve signal timing. The outcome of properly training staff and proactively operating and maintaining traffic signals is signal timing that reduces congestion and fuel consumption ultimately improving our quality of life and the air we breathe. This manual provides an easy-to-use concise, practical and modular guide on signal timing. The elements of signal timing from policy and funding considerations to timing plan development, assessment, and maintenance are covered in the manual. The manual is the culmination of research into practices across North America and serves as a reference for a range of practitioners, from those involved in the day to day management, operation and maintenance of traffic signals to those that plan, design, operate and maintain these systems.

Pedestrian Collisions

Book Description

Collision Reconstruction Methodologies - Volume 10A - The last ten years have seen explosive growth in the technology available to the collision analyst, changing the way reconstruction is practiced in fundamental ways. The greatest technological advances for the crash reconstruction community have come in the realms of photogrammetry and digital media analysis. The widespread use of scanning technology has facilitated the implementation of powerful new tools to digitize forensic data, create 3D models and visualize and analyze crash vehicles and environments. The introduction of unmanned aerial systems and standardization of crash data recorders to the crash reconstruction community have enhanced the ability of a crash analyst to visualize and model the components of a crash reconstruction. Because of the technological changes occurring in the industry, many SAE papers have been written to address the validation and use of new tools for collision reconstruction. Collision Reconstruction Methodologies Volumes 1-12 bring together seminal SAE technical papers surrounding advancements in the crash reconstruction field. Topics featured in the series include: • Night Vision Study and Photogrammetry • Vehicle Event Data Recorders • Motorcycle, Heavy Vehicle, Bicycle and Pedestrian Accident Reconstruction The goal is to provide the latest technologies and methodologies being introduced into collision reconstruction - appealing to crash analysts, consultants and safety engineers alike.

An Introduction to Pedestrian and Bicyclist Access to Public Transit for Professional Engineers

Book Description

Introductory technical guidance for professional engineers interested in pedestrian and bicyclist access to public transit. Here is what is discussed: 1. INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN AND OPERATIONAL MEASURES, 2. TRANSIT ACCESS, 3. BICYCLIST FACILITY DESIGN.

Pedestrian Safety

Book Description

This comprehensive report on pedestrian safety builds on the current level of knowledge of pedestrian safety countermeasures by identifying the most effective advanced technology and intelligent transportation systems, such as automated pedestrian detection and warning systems (infrastructure-based and vehicle-based), road design, and vehicle structural design improvements, that could potentially mitigate the crash forces on pedestrians in the event of a crash. The report also includes recommendations on how new technological developments could be incorporated into educational and enforcement efforts and how they could be integrated into national design guidelines developed. Charts and tables.

Transportation

Book Description

This article explains why safety for elderly drivers and pedestrians is an issue. Information is provided on the changing age structure in Canada and the importance of mobility, followed by a discussion of older people and the problems they face on the road. It addresses the age-related changes individuals often experience that can affect mobility, and includes a discussion of environmental factors that may have an impact on older drivers and pedestrians. It concludes with an overview of some possible countermeasures that could be taken by the elderly individual, urban developers, highway planning departments and others who are concerned about these issues.

Traffic Safety and Human Behavior

Book Description

This comprehensive 2nd edition covers the key issues that relate human behavior to traffic safety. In particular it covers the increasing roles that pedestrians and cyclists have in the traffic system; the role of infotainment in driver distraction; and the increasing role of driver assistance systems in changing the driver-vehicle interaction.
