Paediatric Allergy and Clinical Immunology (As Applied to Atopic Disease)

Book Description

This is a practical reference volume for the student or practising physician to aid him in the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of allergy in children. It is based on procedures used at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. In this new fourth edition, material has been added and established treatments up-dated. The allergies to which children are subject are discussed in clear, straightforward language, as are the basic principles of atopic disease. There are sections on prophylaxis of allergy, common mistakes in the care of the allergic patient, the optimistic approach to the care of the allergic patient, anaphylaxis in man, and the immunoglobulins. Each section is documented. Four appendices offer various diets and discuss immunological deficiency diseases, beta adrenergic blockade, and the pathophysiology of asthma.

Pediatric Allergy: Principles and Practice E-Book

Book Description

Pediatric Allergy supplies the comprehensive guidance you need to diagnose, manage, and treat virtually any type of allergy seen in children. Drs. Leung, Sampson, Geha, and Szefler present the new full-color second edition, with coverage of the diagnosis and management of anaphylaxis, the immune mechanisms underlying allergic disease, the latest diagnostic tests, and more. Treat the full range of pediatric allergic and immunologic diseases through clinically focused coverage relevant to both allergists and pediatricians. Understand the care and treatment of pediatric patients thanks to clinical pearls discussing the best approaches. Easily refer to appendices that list common food allergies and autoantibodies in autoimmune diseases. Apply the newest diagnostic tests available—for asthma, upper respiratory allergy, and more—and know their benefits and contraindications. Treat the allergy at its source rather than the resulting reactions through an understanding of the immune mechanisms underlying allergic diseases. Get coverage of new research that affects methods of patient treatment and discusses potential reasons for increased allergies in some individuals. Better manage potential anaphylaxis cases through analysis of contributing facts and progression of allergic disease. Effectively control asthma and monitor its progression using the new step-by-step approach. Eliminate difficulty in prescribing antibiotics thanks to coverage of drug allergies and cross-reactivity.

Food Allergy in Infancy and Childhood

Book Description

This book covers all basic and clinical aspects related to food allergy in both infancy and childhood. Pathophysiology, biochemistry, immunological mechanisms, as well as current problems of diagnosis and therapy are examined. In addition, the effectiveness of diets in infancy in the prevention of food allergy and atopy is critically examined.

The Allergy Epidemic

Book Description

As an internationally renowned specialist in childhood allergy and immunology, Prof. Susan Prescott takes us on a journey into the science behind the allergy epidemic. As both an allergy specialist working in a busy children's hospital and as a cutting edge research scientist, Prescott is perfectly placed to explore how and why we are experiencing an epidemic rise in allergic diseases, as well as the practical side of dealing with these potentially serious conditions. With clear, no-nonsense explanations and a very personable style, Prescott informs, assures, and educates in this book.

Severe Asthma

Book Description

Severe asthma is a form of asthma that responds poorly to currently available medication, and its patients represent those with greatest unmet needs. In the last 10 years, substantial progress has been made in terms of understanding some of the mechanisms that drive severe asthma; there have also been concomitant advances in the recognition of specific molecular phenotypes. This ERS Monograph covers all aspects of severe asthma – epidemiology, diagnosis, mechanisms, treatment and management – but has a particular focus on recent understanding of mechanistic heterogeneity based on an analytic approach using various ‘omics platforms applied to clinically well-defined asthma cohorts. How these advances have led to improved management targets is also emphasised. This book brings together the clinical and scientific expertise of those from around the world who are collaborating to solve the problem of severe asthma.

Finding a Path to Safety in Food Allergy

Book Description

Over the past 20 years, public concerns have grown in response to the apparent rising prevalence of food allergy and related atopic conditions, such as eczema. Although evidence on the true prevalence of food allergy is complicated by insufficient or inconsistent data and studies with variable methodologies, many health care experts who care for patients agree that a real increase in food allergy has occurred and that it is unlikely to be due simply to an increase in awareness and better tools for diagnosis. Many stakeholders are concerned about these increases, including the general public, policy makers, regulatory agencies, the food industry, scientists, clinicians, and especially families of children and young people suffering from food allergy. At the present time, however, despite a mounting body of data on the prevalence, health consequences, and associated costs of food allergy, this chronic disease has not garnered the level of societal attention that it warrants. Moreover, for patients and families at risk, recommendations and guidelines have not been clear about preventing exposure or the onset of reactions or for managing this disease. Finding a Path to Safety in Food Allergy examines critical issues related to food allergy, including the prevalence and severity of food allergy and its impact on affected individuals, families, and communities; and current understanding of food allergy as a disease, and in diagnostics, treatments, prevention, and public policy. This report seeks to: clarify the nature of the disease, its causes, and its current management; highlight gaps in knowledge; encourage the implementation of management tools at many levels and among many stakeholders; and delineate a roadmap to safety for those who have, or are at risk of developing, food allergy, as well as for others in society who are responsible for public health.

Prevention of Allergy and Allergic Asthma

Book Description

Annotation In the western world, the prevalence of allergy and asthma has increased two- to threefold over the last 40 years and has reached epidemic proportions. This book represents the first complete document containing recommendations on the prevention of allergy and allergic asthma based on the current understanding of the immunological mechanisms of allergic reactions. Prevention of Allergy and Allergic Asthma was a collaborative project between the WAO (World Allergy Organization) and the WHO, launched in 1999. Following two interim reports, this monograph is the final report of the group of international experts involved in the project, ranging from basic immunologists to clinicians. Both theoretical and practical aspects are discussed, and constructive advice is given. Through its network of more than 70 member societies, the WAO will now promote the concept of prevention of allergies and allergic asthma worldwide to benefit patients prone to become allergic, to prevent the worsening of existing allergic diseases, and to reduce their high cost to society. This publication is recommended to specialists in allergy, pediatrics, pneumology and dermatology as well as to general practitioners, health care professionals, journalists, politicians and patients. Only by increasing the knowledge about allergic diseases throughout society can the right steps be taken for their effective prevention.
