Three times in one week intruders trespass on the property of well known espionage author, Sidney Mason. The first two intruders belong to the same group-their infractions motivated by radio evangelist T. Tommy Dump. The third intruder, when apprehended by Sidney's bodyguards, has no tongue. His legs are a maze of scars. Through his garbled speech two words are barely comprehended. One is Sidney's name. The other is the word 'bell'. Within days, Sidney and her lifetime partner are attacked in their car, and the young intruder with no tongue is on a slab in Baltimore. The young man's death and the disappearance of three small children appear to correlate to Sidney's latest book research. In a feverish race against time, she and Parker must unravel the hours leading up to the young man's death to discover the identity of their attackers.

Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian is the most ambitious photographic and ethnographic record of Native American cultures ever produced. Published between 1907 and 1930 as a series of twenty volumes and portfolios, the work contains more than two thousand photographs intended to document the traditional culture of every Native American tribe west of the Mississippi. Many critics have claimed that Curtis's images present Native peoples as a "vanishing race," hiding both their engagement with modernity and the history of colonial violence. But in this major reappraisal of Curtis's work, Shamoon Zamir argues instead that Curtis's photography engages meaningfully with the crisis of culture and selfhood brought on by the dramatic transformations of Native societies. This crisis is captured profoundly, and with remarkable empathy, in Curtis's images of the human face. Zamir also contends that we can fully understand this achievement only if we think of Curtis's Native subjects as coauthors of his project. This radical reassessment is presented as a series of close readings that explore the relationship of aesthetics and ethics in photography. Zamir's richly illustrated study resituates Curtis's work in Native American studies and in the histories of photography and visual anthropology.

A story inspired by true events. Nicky, a pushy young radio presenter with a dark past, lands her first big job on a struggling provincial radio station in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. Marc, a world-weary advertising man, takes pity when no-one responds to her pleas for listeners to text her show. He falls for her and invents a whole cast of characters, a total of 18, and assigns a second-hand mobile to each. The station's fortunes change dramatically as a result of all the messages they receive from these individuals, not having a clue that they are fictitious. Marc and Nicky, whose ambition has driven her from executive bed to bed, finally make out - but his texts have been so convincing she's fallen for one of his characters! Nicky then discovers Marc's deception, and flees. Mortified, Marc is shocked to find how she has been deceiving him all along. Finally he is rescued by one of her broadcasting colleagues. They fall in love, marry, settle down... and Nicky, meanwhile, lands the job of her dreams.

Fresh from a war with rival rancher Miguel Aguilar, and still licking family wounds, Martin Baron and his son, Anson, go their separate ways as Jory Sherman continues the epic saga of the Barons. Martin heeds the call of the Texas Rangers, hoping to restore honor to his native Texas as the storm of war quickly approaches. News from the east speaks of a long and drawn out conflict between the Union and the Confederacy. Though Martin never believed in slavery and holds no loyalty to the Confederacy, the Rangers seem like his best bet to defend his home, and perhaps give him the opportunity to bring Aguilar to justice. Unlike his father, whom he sees as abandoning the ranch in its time of greatest need, Anson stays behind to pick up the pieces after the war. He wishes to bring the Barons' ranch to new glory, but to do so, he'll need to capture the elusive white bull, El Blanco Diablo, to sire his herd. And of course there's Lorene Purvis, the beautiful woman who's pledged her love to Anson; she may be the key to a new start. The trail soon grows rocky for the Baron men. When Aguilar escapes after a bloody ambush, he has nothing but revenge against the Baron family festering in his head. Meanwhile, Anson's vaqueros have abandoned the Baron ranch, and a band of Apache have set their sights on making it their own the only way they know how . . . by killing the man who runs it. The Barons have always been respected, but as rough times roll in, they're forced to reevaluate where their friends' loyalties lie, while also questioning their own. One thing's for sure, they won't lay down without a fight, and they'll do anything to defend The Baron Honor.
