Borderlands Art Practice


Book Description

In this study, I perform identity as a shifting borderlands theorized through the process and product of art, performance, writing, and pedagogy. The importance of this study is to first, address a gap in the literature on border and Chicana/o artists in relation to borderlands theories. Second, this study considers what borderlands through food, art, and performance offer spaces of art education. For this study, I employ a methodology of borderlands art practice, a practice-based research that addresses border artist practices and undervisible borderlands spaces. I engage in practices of making food, images, video/GIFs, and performative writing. Next, I use theories and concepts that emerged from the art and performative processes as well as the disciplines of food, public, and border pedagogies to create an uncertain art pedagogy. A multiplicitous mass of doings emerged from this study that performed the borderlands of identity, race/ethnicity, authenticity, and hybrid and impure food practices of the in-between. The visual and performative outcome of this study is fragmented, ambiguous, uncertain, and ambivalent. These processes sit on the borderlands of art education and are comfortable with liminality and uncertainty. Through experience and conversation, hybridized food practices generate new knowledge, or rather, uncertain knowledge. This dissertation occupies an uncertain discipline space in-between art, art education, Chicana/o and Latina/o studies, and food studies. Neither fully art, art education, food nor Chicana/o/Latina/o studies, this study is what queer Chicana writer and feminist theorist Gloria Anzalda describes as a borderland, a vague and undetermined place.




Borderlands Children's Theatre

"This book chronicles the child performer as part of the Mexican-American/Chicana/o theatre experience. Borderlands Children's Theatre explores the phenomenon of the Mexican-American/Chicana/o child performer at the center of Chicana/o and Latina/o theatre culture. Drawing from historical and contemporary theatrical traditions to finally the emergence of Latina/o Youth Theatre and Latina/o Theatre for Young Audiences, it raises crucial questions about the role of the child in these performative contexts and about how childhood and adolescence was experienced and understood. Ecological Borderlands


Book Description

Environmental practices among Mexican American woman have spurred a reconsideration of ecofeminism among Chicana feminists. Christina Holmes examines ecological themes across the arts, Chicana activism, and direct action groups to reveal how Chicanas can craft alternative models for ecofeminist processes. Holmes revisits key debates to analyze issues surrounding embodiment, women's connections to nature, and spirituality's role in ecofeminist philosophy and practice. By doing so, she challenges Chicanas to escape the narrow frameworks of the past in favor of an inclusive model of environmental feminism that alleviates Western biases. Holmes uses readings of theory, elaborations of ecological narratives in Chicana cultural productions, histories of human and environmental rights struggles in the Southwest, and a description of an activist exemplar to underscore the importance of living with decolonializing feminist commitment in body, nature, and spirit.

Book Description

Partitioned Lives: The Irish Borderlands explores everyday life and senses of identity and belonging along a contested border whose official functions and local impacts have shifted across the twentieth century. It does so through the accounts of contemporary borderland residents in Ireland and Northern Ireland who shared with us their reflections on and experiences of the border from the 1950s to the present day. Since the border is the product of the partition of the island and the creation of Northern Ireland, its meaning has been deeply entangled with the radically and often violently opposed perspectives on the legitimacy of Northern Ireland and the political reunification of the island. Yet the intensely political symbolism of the border has meant that relatively little attention has been paid to the lived experience of the border, its material presence in the landscape and in people’s lives, and its materialisation through the practices and policies of the states on either side. Drawing on recent approaches within historical, political and cultural geography and the cross-disciplinary field of border studies, this book redresses this neglect by exploring the Irish border in terms of its meanings (from the political to the personal) but also, and importantly, through the objects (from tables of custom regulations and travel permits to road blocks and military watch towers) and practices (from official efforts to regulate the movement of people and objects across it to the strategies and experiences of those subject to those state policies) through which it was effectively constituted. The focus is on the Irish border as practised, experienced and materially present in the borderlands.
