The Program examined approximately 3,986 acres of proposed timber sale and training development areas. Research on these survey tracts included an archival records search for previously recorded historic and prehistoric sites and a field examination of all survey areas at 20-m intervals by both pedestrian reconnaissance and screened, subsurface posthole tests.

This survey documented 24 sites and isolated finds in a single survey tract as well as two additional sites located outside of the survey tract at Fort Leonard Wood. Sixteen of these are sites considered eligible for the NRHP [National Register of Historic Places] pending additional investigation.

The purpose of the Phase I survey was to identify archaeological resources located within the specified survey area and evaluate the potential of the identified resources for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The Program surveyed approximately 4,000 acres in 3 separate tracts (Central United States Forest Service Joint Use Land tract, Northern Musgrave Hollow tract, Old Indian Lead Mine tract).
