BES, the Beijing Spectrometer, began its first groundbreaking physics run, thirty years ago, in 1989. This is the first high energy physics experiment in China, and has been unique throughout the world for its thorough and extended coverage of the tau and charm energy region. Since then, the BES detector has undergone steady improvements, upgrading to BESII in 1998 and to BESIII in 2008. Over the same period, the collaboration has expanded from 150 members, across 10 institutions in China and the United States, to about 500 members, across 72 institutions and 15 countries. The physics program, too, has extended from light hadron spectroscopy, tau, and charm physics to the discovery of exotic charmonium-like states, precision tests of the Standard Model of particle physics, and searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model. This special volume collects the proceedings of the symposium held at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Beijing, in celebration of the 30-year span of achievements and progress at the BES, BESII, and BESIII experiments. Written by many leaders of the BES collaborations, these proceedings document the early days of the BES experiments, important milestones, and the future physics program at BESIII.

A Baryon Resonance Analysis Group (BRAG) meeting immediately before the workshop focused especially on the physical meaning of bare and dressed scattering matrix singularities. A focus workshop on? photoproduction rounded o? the NSTAR 2007. The goal of NSTAR 2007 was to bring together experts on all areas of physics relevant to baryon spectroscopy, both in experiment and theory. Latest results were presented in 30 plenary talks and 34 parallel contributions, the proceedings of which are collected in this volume. The workshop was attended by 123 scientists of 41 universities and laboratories from 16 countries. Exciting new high-precision data were shown from facilities in Asia, the US and Europe, e.g. BES, BNL, COSY, ELSA, GRAAL, JLab, MAMI and LEPS. Large-acceptance detectors provide complete angular distributions in many reaction channels. Particular emphasis is put on the measurement of single and double polarisation observables such that many new polarization measurements can be expected in forthcoming meetings.

This volume collects papers presented at the international workshop “Hadron-Nuclear Physics 09” held at Osaka, November 16-19, 2009. The series of this workshop has provided opportunities to discuss common interests of hadron and nuclear physics.Hadrons and nuclei show up different layers of phenomena governed by the same dynamics dictated by the fundamental law of the strong interaction, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The basic building blocks of matter, quarks and gluons, are confined in hadrons, generating their masses dynamically and breaking chiral symmetry spontaneously. The latter is the origin of the presence of the pion which governs the essential part of the nuclear interaction. Therefore, the common key words are chiral symmetry and pions.This volume contains reports of current achievements in hadron physics including exotic multiquark states, meson production reactions and non-linear dynamics of hadrons, and those in nuclear physics clustering phenomena, exotic neutron rich nuclei and the pions in nuclei. This volume contains the proceedings of a workshop held at Drexel University from September 1 to September 3, 1980, under the joint auspices of Drexel University, The University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt University. The workshop dealt with subjects of topical importance to the nuclear physics community: high spin phenomena, heavy ion reactions, transfer reactions, microscopic theories of nuclear structure and the interacting boson model, and miscellaneous topics. This pro ceedings contains all of the invited papers plus short manuscripts expanding on the materials of the invited papers. A total of about 85 participants came to the workshop. The format of the conference was kept informal on purpose, so as to facilitate the discussions. Unfortunately, these discussions, at times intense, could not be included in this volume due to the lack of secretarial help during the meeting. A great deal of current information was exchanged during the conference. However, the full impact of a conference can only be realized when the proceedings have been published and read by par ticipants as well as other colleagues in this field of physics who were not in attendance. We sincerely hope that these proceedings will be useful in this regard.
