Planning of Aquaculture Development

Book Description

This book is based on an FAO/NORAD meeting on the strategy for development of aquaculture as an industry and on the author's wide experience with FAO. After introducing the subject and its present organization, attention is given to the basic data required for aquaculture planning, the varying need of small-scale rural aquaculture and large-scale industry. Other chapters cover auxiliary industries, manpower needs and training, research and information, manpower neds and training, research and information, investment decisions and financing, legal rights to sites and stocks, disease control and public health safeguards, conflicts in stocks, disease control and public health safeguards, conflicts in land and water use, pollution and other environmental problems. This useful treatise is amply illustrated to provide guidance in planning aquaculture development individually and nationally.

Guidelines for the Promotion of Environmental Management of Coastal Aquaculture Development

Book Description

This document is directed to aquaculture development specialists, coastal resource use planners and government officials involved and interested in the planning and management of coastal aquaculture development within the wider context of resource use in coastal areas. It is intended to serve in the promotion of environmental management of coastal aquaculture. Guidelines are given for improved environmental management of coastal aquaculture based on an overview of selected published experiences and concepts. Potential adverse environmental effects of and on coastal aquaculture practices are addressed with consideration of main socio-economic and bio-physical factors. Selected environmental management options are described for application both at policy-level and farm-level.

An Evaluation of Small-scale Freshwater Rural Aquaculture Development for Poverty Reduction

Book Description

This report looks at small-scale aquaculture from the viewpoint of poverty reduction. What are the main factors that enable fish farming to generate livelihoods and reduce poverty? Based on case studies, the first part of the report highlights the importance of access to capital assets--human, social, natural, physical, and financial--and to a range of transforming processes, such as markets, institutions, facilities, infrastructure, and services.

Aquaculture Perspective of Multi-Use Sites in the Open Ocean

Book Description

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This volume addresses the potential for combining large-scale marine aquaculture of macroalgae, molluscs, crustaceans, and finfish, with offshore structures, primarily those associated with energy production, such as wind turbines and oil-drilling platforms. The volume offers a comprehensive overview and includes chapters on policy, science, engineering, and economic aspects to make this concept a reality. The compilation of chapters authored by internationally recognized researchers across the globe addresses the theoretical and practical aspects of multi-use, and presents case studies of research, development, and demonstration-scale installations in the US and EU.
