Like most supplement volumes of the platinum-group metal series,Platinum Suppl. Vol. A 1 has been written by an international team of specialists. It comprises technological data of all six platinum-group metals and their technically relevant alloys and compounds. The volume starts with a review on the recovery of the platinum-group metals (23 pages); the next 42 pages are devoted to processes for separating and refining the PGM in order to obtain metals of high purity. The electrodeposition of the PGM and their alloys is treated on 26 pages.The by far most extensive section deals with PGMand their alloys and compounds in catalysis. After a historicalsurvey and alist of important reviewson PGMcatalysis,the catalytic properties of the metals are treated in a general way, followed by unsupported metals and alloys including preparation of catalysts and their reactions in various industrial processes. The role of supported metals and alloys is described in asimilar manner. This isfollowed byan extensive description of the preparation and the reactions of PGM compounds with various nonmetals and their catalytically active role in a number of industrial processes (226 pages). The last chapter (21 pages) is a compilation of data on the medical use of cytostatic platinum compounds. Platinum and Other Metal Coordination Compounds in Cancer Chemotherapy

Taken together the data presented in this review, and work by many other investigators, support the notion that DNA excision repair is important in a tumor cell's resistance to platinum compounds. Inhibition of this repair system by combination chemotherapy with the excision repair inhibitors HU and Ara-C produces synergistic cell kills and increased levels and persistance of DNA interstrand crosslinks. The studies with cis-DDP and ~-DDP in combination with UV induced thymine dimers suggest that there may be competition for DNA repair enzymes between the dimer and the platinum lesion. Whether the competing lesion is an intrastrand crosslink, interstrand crosslink, or platinum monoadduct (or all of these lesions) cannot be determined. The similarity between an intrastrand crosslink and a cyclobutane dimer suggests that these lesions may compete for repair. However, the increased peak levels of interstrand crosslinks, and increased persistence of these lesions at later time points suggest that this lesion may also be a substrate for the repair system. These observations may be of clinical relevance. Recently Dr. Kathy Albain of our institution has completed a Phase III I study using a 12 hour pretreatment with HU and Ara-C in patients prior to their cis-DDP therapy. She observed a significant number of responders in this trial (54). She is currently completing a second Phase IIII study substituting IV HU for the oral formulation. We anticipate initiating other clinical trials based upon these observations.

However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued.
