Abram Ryan was an American poet, an active proponent of the Confederate States of America, and a Roman Catholic priest. He taught theology at a seminary in Missouri until the beginning of the Civil War. He joined the Confederate army. His first poems were about the death of his brother in the war. On May 19, 1866, his most famous poem, "The Conquered Banner," appeared in Freeman's Journal, published thirteen months after General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Some of the poems in this collection include Song of the Mystic, Reverie ["Only a few more years!"], Nocturne ["I sit to-night by the firelight,"], The Old Year and the New, Erin's Flag, The Sword of Robert Lee, A Laugh -- and A Moan, In Memory of My Brother, March of the Deathless Dead, A Land without Ruins, and The Prayer of the South.
