Worship in the Church of England (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Worship in the Church of England The following Work owes its immediate origin to the incidents of the last Parliamentary Session, but the opinions which it expresses are the results of many years' thought and reading. I have in my first chapter explained the reasons which have induced me, a layman, to take up the question, as well as the point of view from which I regard it, and I need not therefore. The Book of Common Worship (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Book of Common Worship Among those Churches of the Lord Jesus Christ which follow the Presbyterian rule and order, Liberty of Worship has been esteemed a most precious privilege and inheritance; and while they have been both fearless and faithful to uphold it, against the intrusion of superstitious and burdensome ceremonies, they have also been diligent to seek, in the Public Services of Religion, the golden mean between a too great laxity and a tyrannical uniformity. Such things as are of Divine Institution they have observed in every Ordinance; and other things they have endeavoured to set forth "according to the Rules of Christian Prudence, agreeable to the general Rules of the Word of God." Although the Books of Common Order, which were prepared for the Reformed Churches, at the beginning, in all countries, contained both prayers and other forms, yet were those books not so much imposed by way of inflexible regulation, as they were offered and accepted as profitable Aids to Worship; and they not only permitted but encouraged the exercise of Free Prayer. In a like spirit the Directory for Worship, adopted at a later time by the Church of Scotland, for the sake of unity with their brethren in the Church of England, so far from establishing an invariable form of Public Worship, expressly provided for a liberty of variation; and it did not in any way prohibit the use of prepared orders and prayers, conformable to the general directions given therein. The same wise and blessed liberty is maintained in the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America even to this day. Worship and Order (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Worship and Order I have all my life been an interested student of ecclesiastical and ecclesiological questions, so I ventured to publish in the quiet days of 1861 a book upon 'the English Cathedral of the Nineteenth Century, ' considered both as abuilding and as an - institution, and in 1874, at a time of great excitement, to bring out 'worship in the Church of England.' But I had been both before and after these dates, and down to the present day, a writer on the class of questions with which those books are concerned, as well in shorter articles and letters to newspapers, as in essays of the longer sort contri buted to reviews, and in papers read at the annual Church Congresses. The belief had grown up in my mind that the course of events was calling upon me to supplement my former books -with further matter, brought together in the solid shape of a volume. So upon turning back to the various essays which I had published, some with and others without my name, I satisfied myself that by grouping a selection of Congress papers and longer review-articles with regard to their subjects more than to their chronology, I could construct in a somewhat consecutive form a collection which should connect and supplement my former publications. Book of Worship With Hymns and Tunes (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Book of Worship With Hymns and Tunes AT the meeting of the General Synod at Canton, in 1893, two Com mittees, of five members each, were appointed, one to revise the Hymns, the other the Tunes, of our Book of Worship, the two Committees to act in co operation. At the next convention of the General Synod, these Committees reported as instructed, giving the plan of their proceedings as well as their results. These may be found printed in the Minutes of the Convention at Hagerstown, Md., in 189 5. At that time they were authorized to complete their nearly finished work and hand it over to the Hymn Book Publishing Committee for publication, allowing the Church three months more for sug gestions. Careful attention was given to all the suggestions - very few in number - which were offered. The delay in publication has arisen not from any want of harmony in the Committees on the work, but from the nature of the case, and, largely, from the difficulties connected with securing the right to use hymns and tunes that were copyright property. Care has been taken to give correctly the names and dates of the authors of hymns and tunes, and where the original text of hymns has been changed, this is indicated by the letter a (altered). In many cases the number of stanzas has been lessened. In a number of instances familiar hymns have alternate, unnumbered tunes attached. Psalms and Hymns Adapted to the Services of the Church of England

Book Description

Excerpt from Psalms and Hymns Adapted to the Services of the Church of England: With Accompanying Tunes, Selected and Revised Selections of Psalms and Hymns are already so numerous, that any addition may perhaps appear unnecessary. The Compiler of the present volume has, however, met with none, in his judgment, so fully calculated to promote uniformity in this part of divine worship as to forbid the present attempt. Directory for Public Worship

Book Description

Excerpt from Directory for Public Worship: For Use in the Presbyterian Church of England The Committee presented a Draft of the Revised Directory to the Synod of 1920. The Synod resolved to submit the Draft to Presbyteries for consideration and suggestion, and instructed the Commit-tee to consider the replies from Presbyteries, and to issue the book for use in Public Worship. The Forms of Service in this book are not intended to interfere with the freedom of our worship, or to be in any sense obligatory. The only exceptions are those portions of the Orders of Service for Ordination and Induction which the Synod has enjoined to be used as they stand; and certain words in the Marriage Service, which are prescribed by Act of Parliament, and are therefore essential to the validity of the marriage. It is most desirable, however, that, as far as possible, the procedure should also be uniform throughout the Church in the Administration of the Sacraments, the Admission of Young Communicants, and the Dedication of Churches.
