Challenging Images of Women and the Media: Reinventing Women’s Lives, edited by Theresa Carilli and Jane Campbell, collects fifteen articles addressing the status of women through an examination of depictions of women in the media. This in-depth study shows how mixed messages from the media muddle attempts at breaking the “glass screen,” causing women to constantly question their role in global culture. With cake ads followed by diet commercials, the media’s depiction of women is both confusing and contradictory. While more and more women have begun to contribute to the media as respected anchors, talk show hosts, and commentators, these portrayals are often counteracted by music videos and reality television shows such as Jersey Shore. Women and men in the news


Book Description

The media carry significant notions of social and cultural norms and values and have a powerful role in constructing and reinforcing gendered images. The news in particular has an important role in how notions of power are distributed in the society. This report presents study findings on how women and men are represented in the news in the Nordic countries, and to what extent women and men occupy the decision-making positions in the media. The survey is based on the recent findings from three cross-national research projects. These findings are supported by national studies. The results indicate that in all the Nordic countries women are underrepresented in the news media both as news subjects and as sources of information. Men also dominate in higher-level decision-making positions. The report includes examples of measures used to improve the gender balance in Nordic news.

The document contains 14 articles focusing on multiethnic education. The objective is to help teachers and other educators attain the insights and conceptual understanding needed to prepare students to function effectively within the world community. Multiethnic education is defined as the process used by educational institutions to reform their environments so that students from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds will experience educational equity. Chapters one and two define the nature of multiethnic education and measure the distance between societal and school curricula. Chapter three provides insights into the planning necessary for teacher preparation. Chapters four and five describe the conflict between the home cultures of the students and the culture of the school and focus on viewing ethnic identities and group behaviors as positive sources of strength. Chapter six describes the conflict between the learning styles of ethnic students and those favored by the school. Chapter seven discusses language diversity while chapter eight emphasizes awareness as the way to become an effective cross-cultural counselor. Chapters nine and ten suggest alternatives to traditional testing and explain goals and characteristics of the multiethnic curriculum. Chapter eleven describes one program, while chapter twelve focuses on school-community cooperation.
