The Real Christ

Book Description

While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him (Matthew 17:5) The Christ many preach and write about is not the real Christ. The Christ of many Evangelical, Protestant, and Catholic churches today is not the actual Christ Jesus who once walked this earth and whom men saw and studied and knew – the Christ who was the incarnate Word of God and the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. He is not the Christ who once lived and died and was raised again. The Christ many talk about today is a pure figment of their own imagination which they have substituted for the actual Christ of history, the Christ who once lived here on earth and who now lives in glory. There is, however, a perfect portrayal of the real Christ, the Christ of actual fact, in all of His many characteristics and complete love, holiness, zeal, and glory. That portrait is from God’s own Word, the Bible. It is found in the preview of the coming Christ given to the Old Testament prophets, and in the life, ministry, and words of the Lord Jesus Christ as He actually moved among men, as documented by His disciples in the books of the New Testament. We have a threefold objective in studying the real Christ: 1. That we may see Him in all His moral glory: The glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth, and we may therefore admire and love and glorify Him as we ought. 2. That we may become like Him when we see Him, or as 2 Corinthians 3:18 puts it: We all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord the Spirit. 3. That in Him we may have a standard for our own conduct, or as John puts it in our third text: He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked (1 John 2:6).

And the only signs that even the most hardened criminals still walk the streets at night are bones. Luskan's sister city, Waterdeep, has sent a detachment to quarantine the unclean city—to let the filth within die, rather than infect the rest of the Realms. But wizard Myrin Darkdance has slipped inside, declaring that she will save Luskan. Kalen "Shadowbane" Dren follows, determined to save Myrin and therefore her pet city—even if he has to kill every rat in Luskan to do it. No Such Thing as Society

Book Description

The 1980s was the revolutionary decade of the twentieth century. To look back in 1990 at the Britain of ten years earlier was to look into another country. The changes were not superficial, like the revolution in fashion and music that enlivened the 1960s; nor were they quite as unsettling and joyless as the troubles of the 1970s. And yet they were irreversible. By the end of the decade, society as a whole was wealthier, money was easier to borrow, there was less social upheaval, less uncertainty about the future. Perhaps the greatest transformation of the decade was that by 1990, the British lived in a new ideological universe where the defining conflict of the twentieth century, between capitalism and socialism, was over. Thatcherism took the politics out of politics and created vast differences between rich and poor, but no expectation that the existence of such gross inequalities was a problem that society or government could solve - because as Mrs Thatcher said, 'There is no such thing as society ... people must look to themselves first.' From the Falklands war and the miners' strike to Bobby Sands and the Guildford Four, from Diana and the New Romantics to Live Aid and the 'big bang', from the Rubik's cube to the ZX Spectrum, McSmith's brilliant narrative account uncovers the truth behind the decade that changed Britain forever.

Sensua's Island

Book Description

Sir George Maxon, a wealthy Englishman, sends his ne’er-do-well son to Australia with a shipload of women who have been procured from jails and workhouses. The knight puts his heir entirely in charge of the whole unusual project. His son is to oversee the auctioning of the women to the male Australian colonists. Primarily, however, the father thinks this experience will guide his wastrel son toward a life pattern of maturity, acceptance of responsibility, and faithfulness to commitments. In his heart, Sir George knows the money gained means nothing. On board Expectant, so named by the waggish Sir George, the young George creates distractions for the cargo and crew to help ease the boredom of the long voyage. Underway across the wide Pacific Ocean, all goes well until a storm of death-dealing force dooms the ship. Many lives are lost. What survivors there are manage to reach the shore of a small island. This group includes George and Tommie, the ship’s cabin boy. Work begins to make the island habitable for humans—food, fire, and sharks present enduring problems. After many weeks of waiting for news of Expectant and his son, Sir George makes a bold decision—he will search for his boy. In the company of his two closest friends, the knight sets sail on a quest that suggests little hope for success. Ever present is the evil shadow of Sir Barton Blackmer hanging over the heads of everyone. Blackmer is constantly obsessed by his hatred of Sir George, whom he blames for all the troubles besetting him. When the Black Knight and his band of cutthroats come face-to-face with the defenseless castaways, the senseless slaughter begins.
