Book Description
Excerpt from The Commercial Arithmetic: A Practical Text-Book, for Use in Business Colleges Each of the above figures, when standing alone, represents the number written under it. Consequently, nine is the greatest number that can be expressed by one figure, and numbers greater than nine are expressed by the artifice of increasing the local value Of each figure tenfold by placing one figure to the right Of it; ten times ten or a hundredfold by placing two figures to the right Of it; ten times ten times ten, or a thousandfold, by placing three figures to the right of it, etc. Rem - The distance of a figure from the right of a number is called its order thus, the first figure at the right is the first or units' order the second figure, the second or tens' order the third figure, the third, or hundreds' order the fourth figure, the fourth, or thousands' order, etc. Ten units of any order equaling one unit of the next order on the left. Hence, the representative value of a figure increases tenfold for each order that it is moved to the left, and decreases tenfold for each order that it is moved to the right. For the names and position Of the several orders, see decimal notation table, 138. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
