This book provides the first detailed history of the Bilingual Education Program in the Northern Territory of Australia. This ambitious and innovative program began in 1973 and at different times it operated in English and 19 Aboriginal languages in 29 very remote schools. The book draws together the grassroots perspectives of Indigenous and non-Indigenous practitioners and researchers. Each chapter is based on rich practitioner experience, capturing bottom-up aspirations, achievements and reflections on this innovative, yet largely undocumented language and education program. The volume also makes use of a significant collection of ‘grey literature’ documents to trace the history of the program. An ethnographic approach has been used to integrate practitioner accounts into the contexts of broader social and political forces, education policy decisions and on-the-ground actions. Language in education policy is viewed at multiple, intersecting levels: from the interactions of individuals, communities of practice and bureaucracy, to national and global forces. The book offers valuable insights as it examines in detail the policy settings that helped and hindered bilingual education in the context of minority language rights in Australia and elsewhere.

"This book considers these issues by reviewing selected large-scale interventions to improve education quality in South African schools. These interventions include the District Development Support Programme (DDSP), the Education Quality Improvement Partnership Programme (EQUIP), the IMBEWU programme, the Integrated Education Program (IEP), the Khanyisa School Programme, the Learning for Living (LFL) Project, and the Quality Learning Project (QLP). It locates these interventions by providing a chronology of education policy development in South Africa since 1994 as well as engaging with key debates about the notion of education quality. Furthermore, it invites policy-makers to critically review and reflect on the changes to improve education quality in South Africa since 1994. By bringing together academics, policy-makers and practitioners to reflect on education development the book sheds light on the continuous but elusive search for quality education for all. In so doing, the book provides a basis for a critical conversation about the history of education change in post-apartheid South Africa, and the implications for interventions aimed at improving education quality."--Publisher's note

The children in America's classrooms are changing in complexion and complexity, which makes teaching students with diverse backgrounds one of the greatest challenges you'll face. Administrators are also under pressure to "close the achievement gap" between White and Asian students and their racial and ethnically diverse counterparts.

"A powerful template for crafting responsible and humane schools." --Educational Leadership "Reading this book will make educators feel they have come home to familiar land and can still build anew from there." --Michael Huberman, professor, Graduate School of Education, Harvard University "Sergiovanni's alternative vision of schools as caring, intimate places built on mutual respect, civic responsibility, and shared purposes gets to the heart of excellence in education." --Ernest L. Boyer, president, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Best-selling author and education guru Thomas J. Sergiovanni debunks the popular notion that corporate leadership strategies can be applied to schools. He presents a leadership model based on the specific mission, goals, and rhythms of schools everywhere. This unique framework invites caring and thoughtful educators to build educational communities that are more democratic and responsive to human nature and student development. Filled with practical ideas and real-life examples from a variety of schools, Leadership for the Schoolhouse offers a compelling picture of schooling and leadership at their best.
