Beginning in the 1890s, adventurous souls-- homesteaders, prospectors, speculators, and loggers dazzled by its natural resources--tried their best to tame Idaho's Priest Lake. Yet grand turn-of-the-century Western expansion bypassed the area, sparing its idyllic beauty. In 1897 President Cleveland expanded federal influence over the region and introduced an enduring tension between public and private lands. Still, industrial and recreational use increased. Timber and summer cottages were in high demand. Devastating wildfires also initiated profound change. Population growth accelerated after World War II, and electricity became commonplace. In 1947 a local newspaper crowed, "Priest Lake has become a cult with many vacationists." Today, every privately-owned acre and lot represents past optimism, opportunity, hard work, greed, or politics. "Wild Place" traces those remnants--focusing on stories of the colorful characters who navigated Priest Lake's demanding challenges.

Excerpt from The Priest River Forest Reserve The data on which this report is based were in part obtained during several preliminary trips along the eastern and southern portions of the reserve during the months of May and June, and in part during the month of July and the first half of August, 1897, when the reserve was traversed from north to south along three different routes, with frequent crossings from east to west. USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges (EFRs) are scientific treasures, providing secure, protected research sites where complex and diverse ecological processes are studied over the long term. This book offers several examples of the dynamic interactions among questions of public concern or policy, EFR research, and natural resource management practices and policies. Often, trends observed – or expected -- in the early years of a research program are contradicted or confounded as the research record extends over decades. The EFRs are among the few areas in the US where such long-term research has been carried out by teams of scientists. Changes in society’s needs and values can also redirect research programs. Each chapter of this book reflects the interplay between the ecological results that emerge from a long-term research project and the social forces that influence questions asked and resources invested in ecological research. While these stories include summaries and syntheses of traditional research results, they offer a distinctly new perspective, a larger and more complete picture than that provided by a more typical 5-year study. They also provide examples of long-term research on EFRs that have provided answers for questions not even imagined at the time the study was installed.
