Book Description

This open access book is the first to systematically introduce the principles of urban informatics and its application to every aspect of the city that involves its functioning, control, management, and future planning. It introduces new models and tools being developed to understand and implement these technologies that enable cities to function more efficiently – to become ‘smart’ and ‘sustainable’. The smart city has quickly emerged as computers have become ever smaller to the point where they can be embedded into the very fabric of the city, as well as being central to new ways in which the population can communicate and act. When cities are wired in this way, they have the potential to become sentient and responsive, generating massive streams of ‘big’ data in real time as well as providing immense opportunities for extracting new forms of urban data through crowdsourcing. This book offers a comprehensive review of the methods that form the core of urban informatics from various kinds of urban remote sensing to new approaches to machine learning and statistical modelling. It provides a detailed technical introduction to the wide array of tools information scientists need to develop the key urban analytics that are fundamental to learning about the smart city, and it outlines ways in which these tools can be used to inform design and policy so that cities can become more efficient with a greater concern for environment and equity.

Handbook of Computational Social Science for Policy


Book Description

This open access handbook describes foundational issues, methodological approaches and examples on how to analyse and model data using Computational Social Science (CSS) for policy support. Up to now, CSS studies have mostly developed on a small, proof-of concept, scale that prevented from unleashing its potential to provide systematic impact to the policy cycle, as well as from improving the understanding of societal problems to the definition, assessment, evaluation, and monitoring of policies. The aim of this handbook is to fill this gap by exploring ways to analyse and model data for policy support, and to advocate the adoption of CSS solutions for policy by raising awareness of existing implementations of CSS in policy-relevant fields. To this end, the book explores applications of computational methods and approaches like big data, machine learning, statistical learning, sentiment analysis, text mining, systems modelling, and network analysis to different problems in the social sciences. The book is structured into three Parts: the first chapters on foundational issues open with an exposition and description of key policymaking areas where CSS can provide insights and information. In detail, the chapters cover public policy, governance, data justice and other ethical issues. Part two consists of chapters on methodological aspects dealing with issues such as the modelling of complexity, natural language processing, validity and lack of data, and innovation in official statistics. Finally, Part three describes the application of computational methods, challenges and opportunities in various social science areas, including economics, sociology, demography, migration, climate change, epidemiology, geography, and disaster management. Link Mining and Localisation in the Context of Face-to-Face Contact Networks

For a long time an automatic detection of contacts between humans was not possible. In this work a new generation of resource-aware RFID tags (proximity tags) is used which has the ability to detect reliable face-to-face contacts. This innovation opens up new research possibilities in the ?elds of human contact behaviour analysis, link prediction and indoor localisation. In this context the identi?cation of human contact structures and their underlying pro¬cesses is a prominent research topic. However, the analysis of of?ine social networks has been largely neglected. In this work face-to-face information is utilised to study the link prediction problem as well as dynamic and static contact patterns in face-to-face contact networks. Furthermore the in?uence of user interests and social contacts on the predictability of talk attendance is analysed. The localisation of humans in indoor environments is still a challenging problem. In literature, accurate positioning approaches exist. Unfortunately, these approaches requi¬re expensive hardware and an extensive deployment of suitable infrastructure. Therefo¬re novel approaches are presented that use proximity tags for positioning. All methods are evaluated using real-world data and it is shown that all approaches signi?cantly outperform state-of-the art indoor localisation approaches.
