Proceedings of a Workshop on a Decision Support Tool for Stocking of Atlantic Whitefish

Book Description

Atlantic whitefish (Coregonus huntsmani) are indigenous to Nova Scotia but are confined to a single watershed, the Petite Riviere near Bridgewater. The species is listed as endangered, and a recovery plan has an objective of introducing captive reared Atlantic whitefish to another water body in order to lower the risk of species extinction. This report presents proceedings of a workshop held to investigate the best approach & information requirements needed to develop a decision support framework to guide the selection of new habitats for the recovery of the Atlantic whitefish. Topics of presentations include a proposal for whitefish stocking, the fish transfer & introduction process, tools for environmental decision making, and the requirements of a decision support tool. The appendix includes a copy of the National Code on Introductions & Transfers of Aquatic Organisms.

Proceedings of a Workshop on a Decision Support Tool for Stocking of Atlantic Whitefish

Book Description

The Atlantic whitefish Conservation and Recovery Team (AWCRT) is developing a Recovery Strategy to ensure the survival and ultimately the recovery of this species which is wholly contingent on the continued viability of a population now confined to three semi-natural lakes within the Petite Rivière system. [...] This workshop was held to investigate the best approach and information requirements necessary to develop a decision support framework to guide the selection of new habitats for the recovery of this species. [...] Atlantic Whitefish INTRODUCTION This report provides a record of both the discussions regarding the release of Atlantic whitefish into a water body outside of its current habitat and the draft decision support tool (DST) that was developed at the session. [...] As outlined in the terms of reference for the workshop (Appendix IV), the objective of the meeting was to investigate the need for and utility of a DST to guide selection of new habitats for the survival and recovery of the species. [...] The species is listed as "endangered" and the Recovery Plan includes as an objective the introduction of captive reared Atlantic whitefish to another water body to lower the risk of extinction of the species.

Rebuilding of Marine Fisheries: Global review

Book Description

"Rebuilding depleted stocks is a central part of the fisheries governance agenda. By analysing the available literature, Part 1 of "Rebuilding of marine fisheries" provides a global review of the emergence of the rebuilding paradigm, its key concepts, the trends in fishery resources, and the empirical evidence available on stocks depletion, collapse and rebuilding. It addresses the bio-ecological, economic, and human dimensions of rebuilding or restoration of stocks, multispecies assemblages and habitats/ecosystems and touches on the need for rebuilding at the whole sector level when depletion has become widespread and chronic. The human imensions of stocks and fisheries are given particular attention, looking at conflicting objectives, the bio-economy of rebuilding, its costs and benefits, and the distributional effects of the related reform among actors with their potential social consequences in the short and long terms. Governance is addressed in detail: legal and policy frameworks; rationale and objectives of a rebuilding regime; alternative rebuilding strategies; reference values and protocols; regulatory time-frames; risk management and harvest control rules; impacts of climatic oscillations; management tool-box; implementation guidance and performance evaluation. The document ends with a review of the determinants of success of a rebuilding programme."--Publisher's description for part 1.

Agroclimatology

Book Description

Can we unlock resilience to climate stress by better understanding linkages between the environment and biological systems? Agroclimatology allows us to explore how different processes determine plant response to climate and how climate drives the distribution of crops and their productivity. Editors Jerry L. Hatfield, Mannava V.K. Sivakumar, and John H. Prueger have taken a comprehensive view of agroclimatology to assist and challenge researchers in this important area of study. Major themes include: principles of energy exchange and climatology, understanding climate change and agriculture, linkages of specific biological systems to climatology, the context of pests and diseases, methods of agroclimatology, and the application of agroclimatic principles to problem-solving in agriculture.
