Proceedings of the Workshop on Ion Beam Cooling

Book Description

Annotation Proceedings of the Workshop held November 12-14, 2001 in Kyoto, Japan. Deals with recent topics in the field of ion beam cooling. The approach to hot ion beam cooling is also discussed, from the viewpoint of application of the beam cooling technique.

Ion Beam Cooling: Toward The Crystalline Beam - Proceedings Of The Workshop

Book Description

This book deals with recent topics in the field of ion beam cooling. Indications of one-dimensional ordering observed by electron beam cooling of highly charged heavy ion beams, and crystal beams observed by laser cooling at the RFQ storage ring, are presented together with theoretical and computational investigations on these phenomena. The approach to hot ion beam cooling is also discussed, from the viewpoint of application of the beam cooling technique.

Cyclotrons And Their Applications - Proceedings Of The13th International Conference, Vancouver, 1992

Book Description

This volume describes the latest developments in the design, construction and operation of cyclotrons, from compact machines producing intense beams for isotope production, cancer therapy and industrial use, to the larger versions giving higher energy beams of ions of various elements for nuclear and particle physics. Important topics include ECR ion sources, superconducting magnets and radiofrequency cavities, beam dynamics and diagnostics, beam cooling rings, control systems and various medical and industrial applications.

The Physics of Beams

Book Description

Annotation Proceedings of the December 1993 symposium celebrating 40 years of researcher Sessler's scientific contributions to accelerator and beam physics. Topics include linear colliders; manipulating charged particle beams and light by means of plasma; collective instabilities in accelerator and storage rings; possible applications of plasma lens in high energy physics; and excitation of accelerating wakefields in inhomogeneous plasmas. Includes essays on Sessler's term as director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, his human rights activism, and his education, career, and personal life. Trapping Highly Charged Ions

Book Description

This book provides and elementary introduction to the field of trapping highly charged ions. The first group of chapters is intended to describe the various sorts of highly charged ion traps: EBIT, EBIS, ECR, Storage Rings and various speciality traps. The authors focus on their own ion trap facilities in order to teach by example. The chapters range in scope from comprehensive reviews to brief introductions. The second group of chapters is intended to give a flavour of the various sorts of scientific research which are presently being carried out with traps for highly charged ions. These chapters not only inform, but also stimulate newcomers to think up fresh ideas. The articles in this second group generally fall into one of three broad categories: atomic structure experiments, ion-surface interactions and precision mass spectrometry. The third group of chapters is intended to deal with theory and spectroscopic analysis. It provides some of the background material necessary to make sense of observed phenomenology, to allow detailed explanation of experimental data, and to sensibly plan further experimentation. An appendix provides a complete keyword-annotated bibliography of pa

Particle Accelerator Physics

Book Description

This two-volume book serves as a thorough introduction to the field of high-energy particle accelerator physics and beam dynamics. Volume 1 provides a general understanding of the field and a firm basis for the study of the more elaborate topic, mainly nonlinear and higher-order beam dynamics, which is the subject of Volume 2.
