This publication represents the proceedings of a workshop which discussed the toxicity to biota of metal forms in natural water. The workshop consisted of formal papers on the latest research findings in the area of heavy metal forms (speciation), toxicity and cause-effect relationships. These presentations were followed by two discussion periods: one to evaluate the current "state of the art" of metal speciation determinations; and the other, to identify the immediate research needs which will enable the establishement of heavy metal objectives for the waters of the Great Lakes on the basis of metal forms rather than total metal concentrations.
