Computational intelligence techniques are gaining momentum in the medical prognosis and diagnosis. This volume presents advanced applications of machine intelligence in medicine and bio-medical engineering. Applied methods include knowledge bases, expert systems, neural networks, neuro-fuzzy systems, evolvable systems, wavelet transforms, and specific internet applications. The volume is written in view of explaining to the practitioner the fundamental issues related to computational intelligence paradigms and to offer a fast and friendly-managed introduction to the most recent methods based on computer intelligence in medicine.

The Science of Psychiatry We live in exciting times. Psychiatrists practicing their specialty are beset as never before with news of developments in the field. The conduits of news to the practicing clinician are usually either stories written in the popular medical press such as news circulars and advertisements from commercial concerns, or from de tailed scientific articles written for the scientific community. In both forms, the news has been coming thick and fast. The problem encountered most often by practicing psychiatrists and clini cians responsible for hospital facilities is integrating this material into a coherent whole, with sufficient technical detail to permit the appropriate development or use of the new tests and procedures in the clinical setting. The two volumes comprising the Handbook of Psychiatric Diagnostic Pro cedures represent an attempt to provide a clinically useful review of the current accepted applicability of these tests and procedures, to enable the clinician to properly implement and evaluate the procedures as well as the results obtained.

Transboundary animal diseases (TADs) are a major threat to livestock. They are highly contagious or transmissible, and they have the potential to cause high morbidity and mortality in both susceptible animal populations and humans. In addition, not only are TADs detrimental to national economies, they are also a serious threat to world food security. This volume presents the proceedings of an international workshop on Vaccines and Diagnostics for Transboundary Animal Diseases that was held in Ames (Iowa, USA) in 2012. Experts and scientists from academia, industry and government reviewed the current status of vaccines and diagnostics for high priority TADs, decision-making and regulatory processes for veterinary biologics, and the roles and responsibilities of government agencies. The discussions also addressed achievements and gaps in vaccine and diagnostics development for 11 important TADs as well as the translation of research findings into licensed novel vaccines and diagnostics for high-priority TADs.
