Organized Organic Ultrathin Films

Book Description

This handy reference is the first comprehensive book covering both fundamentals and recent developments in the field with an emphasis on nanotechnology. Written by a highly regarded author in the field, the book details state-of-the-art preparation, characterization and applications of thin films of organic molecules and biomaterials fabricated by wet processes and also highlights applications in nanotechnology The categories of films covered include monomolecular films (monolayers) both on a water surface and on a solid plate, Langmuir-Blodgett films (transferred multilayer films on a solid plate from a water surface), layer-by-layer films (adsorbed multilayer films on a solid support), and spontaneously assembled films in solution.

An Introduction to Ultrathin Organic Films

Book Description

The development of oriented organic monomolecular layers by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and self-assembly (SA) techniques has led researchers toward their goal of assembling individual molecules into highly ordered architectures. Thus the continually growing contribution of LB and SA systems to the chemistry and physics of thin organic films is widely recognized. Equally well-known is the difficulty in keeping up to date with the burgeoning multidisciplinary research in this area. Dr. Ulman provides a massive survey of the available literature. The book begins with a section on analytical tools to broaden the understanding of the structure and properties of monolayers and films. Following sections discuss LB films, the preparation and properties of SA monolayers and films, the modeling of LB and SA monolayers, and the application of LB and SA films.

The Physical Properties of Organic Monolayers

Book Description

This book provides a fundamental physical picture of various phenomena occurring in organic monolayers, dealing with dielectric, elastic, and electronic properties. The dielectric properties are discussed in terms of orientational order parameters, which are used to interpret the dielectric spectrum observed through Maxwell displacement current measurement and optical second harmonic generation measurement. The elastic theory of organic monolayers is based on that of liquid crystals and emphasis is placed on the interfacial effect when discussing the electronic properties of organic monolayers. The discussion in the book mainly concerns the structure dependence (dipole moment) and thickness dependence (interfacial effect) for various phenomena occurring in organic monolayers.

Solution Methods for Metal Oxide Nanostructures

Book Description

Solution Methods for Metal Oxide Nanostructures reviews solution processes that are used for synthesizing 1D, 2D and 3D metal oxide nanostructures in either thin film or in powder form for various applications. Wet-chemical synthesis routes offer a high degree of controllability and reproducibility for 2D nanomaterial fabrication. Solvothermal synthesis, template synthesis, self-assembly, oriented attachment, hot-injection, and interface-mediated synthesis are the main wet-chemical synthesis routes for 2D nanomaterials. Solution Methods for Metal Oxide Nanostructures also addresses the thin film deposition metal oxides nanostructures, which plays a very important role in many areas of chemistry, physics and materials science. Each chapter includes information on a key solution method and their application in the design of metal oxide nanostructured materials with optimized properties for important applications. The pros and cons of the solution method and their significance and future scope is also discussed in each chapter. Readers are provided with the fundamental understanding of the key concepts of solution synthesis methods for fabricating materials and the information needed to help them select the appropriate method for the desired application. - Reviews the most relevant wet chemical solution methods for metal oxide nanostructures, including sol-gel, solvothermal, hydrothermal, co-precipitation methods, and more - Addresses thin film deposition techniques for metal oxide nanostructures, such as spray-pyrolysis, electrodeposition, spin coating and self-assembly - Discusses the pros and cons of each solution method and its significance and future opportunities

Electronic Properties of Conjugated Polymers

Book Description

This book deals with electrical, electrochemical, structural, magnetic, optical and lattice dynamical properties of conjugated polymers such as polyaniline, polyacetylene, polydiacetylene, polypyrrole, polyparaphenylene and polythiophene. Several new conjugated systems and model polyenes are also considered. Since the previous winter school on this topic held in 1985, the focus of interest in the field has broadened and now covers not only conductivity and relaxation phenomena of polyacetylene but also nonlinear optical properties, highly oriented and single crystal polymers, and electrochemical and opto-electrochemical properties of special materials. Particular attention is paid in this volume to the possible applications of these systems, for example, in electrochemical cells as electrode materials and in nonlinear optics devices, which now appear to be much more realistic than previously. The detailed contributions are complemented by short reviews of thin film polymers (Langmuir-Blodgett layers), filled polymers, ferromagnetic polymers, superconducting low-dimensional systems (including organic superconductors and high-temperature superconductors) and the application of fractal models to polymers.
