Prolactin Lesions In Breast Uterus & Prostate

Book Description

First Published in 1989, this book offers a full, comprehensive guide into prolactin function and the treatment of lesions. Carefully compiled and filled with a vast repertoire of notes, diagrams, and references this book serves as a useful reference for Students of Medicine, and other practitioners in their respective fields.

The Prostate as an Endocrine Gland

Book Description

This unique publication illustrates that the prostate elaborates an array of local hormones or "autocoids" and how these influence prostatic growth, function and oncogenesis. It describes how familiarity with these participants and how they effect the character and direction of prostatic function may suggest diagnostic markers of malfunction and new sites and modes of therapeutic intervention. The catholic scope and authorship of the work seeks to integrate the views of those urologists, reproductive physiologists and endocrinologists who presently work with the prostate. It attempts to show all other biologists the full range of the gland's activities and participating molecules. Included are: oncogenes, mitogens, polyamines, prostaglandins, growth factors, antigens, and the familiar steroid, peptide and protein hormones. This volume is unique in its point of view and in the new concepts it presents. Addressed are actions of spermine-binding protein and osteoblastic mitogens, consequences of inhibin/thyrotropin-releasing hormone balance, and urokinase effects. Covered also are androgen modulation of vasoactive intestinal polypeptides, evidence of a prostatolymphoreticular system, secretion of dihydrotestosterone, and a model of the inter-dependence of prostatic epithelium and stroma. This unique new volume is of great value to those in urology, internal medicine, physiology, endocrinology and pharmacology.

Endocrine Toxicology

Book Description

This is the first book to deal comprehensively with endocrine toxicology. It covers the whole spectrum of known toxicant effects on the endocrine system ranging from small disturbances in hormonal secretion to full endocrine neoplasia. In each chapter, internationally recognised authorities have addressed basic endocrine physiology, current techniques for studying endocrine toxicity in vivo and in vitro, known xenobiotic-induced toxicity phenomena and the latest scientific advances in understanding the underlying molecular and cellular events. Consideration is given to important issues such as dietary factors which influence endocrine toxicity, species differences in sensitivity to toxicants, and the toxicity of hormones and drugs. The volume provides a sound basis for understanding the scientific aspects of this complex and important area of toxicology and will be a useful source of information for all those working in this field.

Alternate Methods in the Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Book Description

For many years, patients who complained of prostatism had only a few treatment choices. The patient was either a candidate for an elective prostatectomy, or the operation was deferred until the patient became more symptomatic. The present text summarizes the multiple options which have become available to the practicing urologist. Minimally invasive techniques such as transurethral incision of the prostate, balloon dilatation, hyperthermia, laser therapy, and prostatic stents are described. Medical treatment with alpha-blockers, 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors, and flutamide are addressed by authors who have had extensive clinical experience with the use of these agents.

Tumours of the Mouse

Book Description

The series Pathology of Tumours in Laboratory Animals was initiated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer 25 years ago, to provide experimental pathologists with a comprehensive, coherent source of reference information, for use in chronic toxicology research. The first edition of the volume describing tumors of the mouse was issued in 1979. Since then many papers describing new models, new methods of induction, immunohistochemical methods, or important new details of old models have been published and efforts have been made to incorporate these data wherever possible. Each chapter deals with tumors of a particular organ or system and describes all neoplasms that have been reported to occur in the organ concerned, using the terminology proposed by WHO for human tumors. The structure adopted for each chapter in the first edition (normal structure of the organ in question, classification, morphology and histology of tumors, incidence of spontaneous tumors, methods of inductions, comparative aspects, illustrations and references) is retained in the new edition. Separate chapters are included in the second edition of this volume on tumors of the nasal cavities and tumors of the salivary and lacrimal glands; in the first edition these were described in one chapter. Likewise, the chapter on tumors of hematopoietic organs is now divided into two independent chapters, one on tumors of the lymphohematopoietic tissue and the other describing histolytic sarcoma. A brief chapter on gallbladder tumors has been added.

The Laboratory Mouse

Book Description

"Mice have long been recognized as a valuable tool for investigating the genetic and physiological bases of human diseases such as diabetes, infectious disease, cancer, heart disease, and a wide array of neurological disorders. With the advent of transgenic and other genetic engineering technologies, the versatility and usefulness of the mouse as a model in biomedical research has soared. As a result, mouse colonies everywhere are expanding, and scientists who previously focused on other models are turning their attention to the mouse. Revised to reflect advances since the first edition, The Laboratory Mouse, Second Edition continues to be the most accessible reference on the biology and care of the laboratory mouse. This guide presents basic information and common procedures in detail to provide a quick reference source for investigators, technicians, and caretakers in the humane care and use of the mouse in the laboratory setting. Expanded, updated, and now in color, this new edition includes coverage of the biological features, husbandry, management, veterinary care, experimental methodology, and resources applying specifically to the mouse"--Provided by publisher.

International Review of Cytology

Book Description

International Review of Cytology presents current advances and comprehensive reviews in cell biology-both plant and animal. Articles address structure and control of gene expression, nucleocytoplasmic interactions, control of cell development and differentiation, and cell transformation and growth. Authored by some of the foremost scientists in the field, each volume provides up-to-date information and directions for future research.

Uterine Adenomyosis

Book Description

Recent advances in imaging have renewed interest in uterine adenomyosis. The disease can now be diagnosed before hysterectomy which has advanced our understanding of its clinical impact, such as its effect on fertility. This book will provide an in-depth reference to recent scientific advances in the pathophysiology of uterine adenomyosis. It will represent some of the most up-to date and authoritative work in the field. This book is aimed at specialist clinicians and postgraduates wishing to acquire in-depth understanding of adenomyosis, and will be an essential reading for research scientists who will find a distillation of an up-to-date critical reading of literature.
