A Stake in the Future is a comprehensive study of the Whitehorse Mining Initiative, which was first conceived by the leaders in the Canadian mining industry. The goal was to revitalize the mining industry, attract new investment and forge an alliance with major stakeholders such as government, environmental groups, First Nations, the mining industry, and labour. The book examines the political, cultural, and policy issues involved in developing a new consenus-based approach to resolving land and resource use disputes with particular focus on a national multi-stakeholder initiative in the mineral sector.

Book Description

This report provides an overview of the federal, provincial and territorial policy initiatives from 1985-89. The report covers only changes and new activities introduced over the five years, rather than ongoing and unaltered programs. Policies still in the development stage were included only if they were already in the process of public discussion. Oil and gas, except for oil sands, are excluded. Policy initiatives are listed by province and for the federal government, with a separate listing for federal policy initiatives North of 60. For each area, information is given on mineral-related task forces and studies, assistance initiatives, regulation, and trade initiatives.

Economic Potential of Base Metal and Gold Mining in Newfoundland


Book Description

The assessment of base metal and gold supply are based on the years 1946-85, subdivided into decades to examine time trends. Money values are expressed in constant 1987 Canadian dollars. Appraisals are made on a potential value, before-tax basis, including all direct costs and revenues associated with exploration and development, then on an after-tax basis considering the application of federal and Newfoundland income and mining taxation systems to the overall potential values. The level and components of mining taxation are compared to other provinces and territories and base metal and gold activities are compared to those in Canada and in the Appalachian Region. The capability developed to assess the economic potential in Newfoundland is applied to evaluate and compare the impact of regional development policy options, including geologic data base development, direct assistance for mineral exploration, support for new mine development, production stage incentives, and assistance for mines faced with temporary or permanent closure.
