This historical study of mental healthcare workers’ efforts to educate the public challenges the supposition that public prejudice generates the stigma of mental illness. Drawing on extensive archival research, this book argues that psychiatrists, nurses and social workers generated representations of mental illness which reflected their professional aspirations, economic motivations and perceptions of the public. Sharing in the stigma of their patients, healthcare workers sought to enhance the prestige of their professions by focussing upon the ability of psychiatry to effectively treat acute cases of mental disturbance. As a consequence, healthcare workers inadvertently reinforced the stigma attached to serious and enduring mental distress. This book makes a major contribution to the history of mental healthcare, and critiques current campaigns which seek to end mental health discrimination for failing to address the political, economic and social factors which fuel discrimination. It will appeal to academics, students, healthcare practitioners and service users.

Written from an eclectic, integrative point of view, this authoritative yet accessible text equips students and practitioners with theoretical and empirical knowledge of different psychotherapy and counseling approaches. Todd and Bohart, who together have a total of sixty years of experience teaching clinical psychology courses, offer a clear, understandable view of how each theoretical perspective regards the person, the persons problems, and how to help the person change. The fourth edition retains the psychotherapy and history components from previous editions and addresses current and future trends in professional psychology. New or updated topics include: assessment; professional, legal, and ethical issues; brief therapy; computerized treatment programs; Internet testing; online therapy; treatment guidelines and manuals and the controversies associated with them; radical behavior therapies; cultural and gender issues; expanding roles for psychologists in neuropsychology and primary health care; managed care; and developments in psychotherapy research and psychotherapy integration. Careful cross-referencing and clear connections between topics permit chapters to be read in any order. The authors maintain a Web site (http://homepage.mac.com/judithtodd/artboharttext/) with the very latest updates on psychotherapy theory integration, activities, downloadable chapter learning objectives, links to useful articles, and more.

A major aim of the books in this series is to promote psychology's appreciation of the neglected giants in its history. The chapters document the significance of these early contributions, many of them made more than a century ago. Most of the chapters are revisions of invited addresses delivered at psychological conventions. Several of the authors are students, colleagues, or offspring of their pioneers and all of them are intrigued by the life and work of the psychologists about whom they have written. All of the portraits are informal; on occasion, even humorous. Some are "impersonations"--telling stories in what were or might have been the pioneer's own words. This book provides source materials for teachers of undergraduate courses in psychology--particularly the history of psychology--who want to add a personal view in their lectures and offer interesting readings for their students. Each of the five volumes in this series contains different profiles thereby bringing more than 100 of the pioneers in psychology more vividly to life.
