Public and Private Rights (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Public and Private Rights Alarming as are some of these signs at times, we do not predict a national catastrophe, as do some, for the reason that there is intelligence, moral sentiment and Christianity enough in the land to overcome the danger. God has decreed the overthrow of all unrighteousness, and his plans cannot be defeated. The victory may be delayed, but it cannot be prevented. The Public Rights in Boston Common

Book Description

Excerpt from The Public Rights in Boston Common: Being the Report of a Committee of Citizens The attempts to turn Boston Common to semi-private uses, or to encroach upon its boundaries, have been so per sistent, that it has seemed best to give a history thereof for the past eight years. We begin, therefore, with the attempt to place upon the Parade - Ground, in 1869, the building for the great Musical Festival of that year. As will be seen by the record, permission was granted to erect a building there. The popular feeling Was so strong, however, that the managers Of that enterprise deemed it injudicious to accept the grant, and the building was placed upon land farther south and west. It is a fact, also, that at the time a committee of citizens had decided to appeal to the Supreme Judicial Court, if any attempt to build was made, and that eminent counsel were of Opinion, that the City Council had exceeded its legal powers in making the grant. The Rights and Duties of Citizens, of the United States

Book Description

Excerpt from The Rights and Duties of Citizens, of the United States: A Manual of Citizenship The scholars in our public schools and colleges should be instructed as to the elements that go to make up a good and useful citizen of our country, and the obligations, civil, social, and political, due to others from them. They should be instructed to yield respect and obedience to the laws, and to hold on with unflinching firmness to the Constitution and the Union of States. They should be taught the love of liberty and order, to walk in the path of patriotism, of fidelity to our country, and of duty to God. This is necessary in order that when they become of adult age they may be prepared to exhibit wisdom in the cabinet; the purest patriotism; the highest integrity, public and private; morals without a stain; and religious feelings without intolerance and without extravagance. In this little manual of the rights and duties of citizenship I sing the love of country and the pride of country to the youth of both sexes of my country. I teach the need of beating back ones country's enemies, whether they reside in or out of the United States - a most true song, to which I hope the hearts of the youth of our country will burst responsive into fiery melody, followed by fiery strokes before long.
