Quality Assurance and Quality Control Related to Environmental Samples for the Northern River Basins Study

Book Description

Describes interlaboratory studies and quality assurance/control procedures related to the analysis of environmental samples for the Northern River Basins Study. The interlaboratory studies involved sending samples to be analyzed for dioxin and furan congeners, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, resin acids, metals, and chlorinated phenols. Laboratories were evaluated on closeness to mean and expected concentrations, surrogate recoveries, detection limits, sample handling, dedicated facilities, subcontracted work, high- versus low-resolution mass spectrography results, additional quality assurance/control effort, non-detect data that was detected by other laboratories, flexibility, and treatment of outliers. Appendices include analytical and sampling protocols, plus terms of reference for analytical services.

Quality Assurance in Environmental Monitoring

Book Description

It is increasingly recognized that the greatest risks of error in environmental analysis lie in the sample preparation rather than the analysis stage. This book describes the precautions that must be taken from the sampling to the sample pretreatment via the storage stage to assure good quality. Typical pitfalls - and recommendations for avoiding them - are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the monitoring of trace contaminants in environmental matrices (e. g., water, sediment, plants, air). This book, based on the experience of specialists, constitutes an invaluable guide to the quality assurance relevant to environmental chemists.

Quality Assurance for Water Analysis

Book Description

Quality assurance (QA) has become an increasingly important topic, as environmental monitoring bodies realize that accuracy of measurements can depend very much on how the measurement is taken. This book will describe methods in light of all of the European, US, and international (ISO) guidelines for QA of water analysis. It is the third book in the Water Quality Measurement Series, it tackles the growing problem of developing an international understanding for measurement and data collection. The author gives a detailed overview of: * The purpose of water analysis * Quality systems and quality control * Sources of error including sample contamination * Method validation * Certified reference materials * Data Reporting * Inter-laboratory studies

Northern River Basins Study

Book Description

Report to the federal ministers of Environment and Indian & Northern Affairs, Alberta's Minister of Environmental Protection, and NWT's Minister of Renewable Resources. Summarises the main scientific findings of the Northern River Basins Study, which was established to examine the relationship between industrial, municipal, agricultural, and other development and the Peace, Athabasca, and Slave River basins. Reviews the characteristics of the northern river basins and their peoples, the organisation of the Study, and major findings in the areas of environmental overview, use of aquatic resources, traditional knowledge, flow regulation, fish distribution and habitat, nutrients, dissolved oxygen, contaminants, drinking water, ecosystem health, modelling, human health, and cumulative effects. Recommendations by the Study Board, First Nations, and scientific advisors regarding such issues as basin management, monitoring, research, public participation, and a successor organisation are then presented. Also includes a summary of opinions, suggestions, and recommendations expressed at 17 community workshops held throughout the northern river basins area.

Northdat

Book Description

The NORTHDAT data base contains information on over 100 parameters routinely reported from ten pulp mills in the Peace and Athabasca basins. Data are included for the seven Alberta mills from January 1970 to December 1993 and for the three British Columbia mills from January 1988 to December 1993. This report documents the NORTHDAT data base, including data sources, data files and units, software used for extraction of data, using the data base (installation, start-up, data extraction, addition of new data), administering the data base, and data quality assurance and quality control. Sample screens, lists of data fields, and names of parameters stored (metals, resin acids, fatty acids, dioxins/furans, chlorinated phenolics, polynuclear aromatics, and others).
